The second latest game, Attila, was the most involved game vanilla both on the campaign map and battles, though.

That isn't to say older games didn't have some advantages (for example, I think the recruitment pool-based system as seen in Medieval 2 would fix many issues in later games, spamming top-tier units and such like) or some of their systems had more depth (for example, trait and retinue acquisition system most definitely has more intrinsic depth than talent trees but most of it takes place behind the scenes rather than affecting your decision-making: you might pay attention to stuff like 80%+ happiness causing poor with taxes trait but deliberately almost killing your general for HP buff probably isn't something you'd consciously attempt due to risk of losing the general being involved) but Attila definitely had more game systems both on the battlefield and campaign map, in addition to being more difficult due to less bad AI and other such factors.

Best defence mission I have ever played. It's so intense that I was naturally forming attachments to individual soldiers performing well.

Like at the top right near the little sheds, I had one guy further out than everyone else that would pop people as they came through the sheds.
He fucking sat there as tanks rumbled past him to kill the infantry supporting him.

The guys I position in the factories to the top left all claimed German hats as well.

And the game didn't drastically change at all, you just drop off your infanterie kompanie/supports weapon kompneya/whatever at the edge of the base and have your grens or maxims arrive slightly faster where they need to be. And that only applies for OH/sov.

Frankly, I liked when units arrived from off map much more, as it allowed for example to support your teammate by having your units spawn on his side, which comes really handy on maps like rails and metal where the southern fuel point and VP get contested all the time.

I disagree. Winning the match should depend on the player's skill, not on enviroment conditions. Imagine loosing your VPs and having only 50 points left and a blizzard comes along. You pretty much lost the match not because lack of your skill or better opponent's skill but rather unfortunate timing that you had no control over. Thats why they removed it from automatch.

With that same reasoning you could argue that vehicle armour should be removed as a mechanic. I mean, an IS2 bouncing three pak shots when he's one penetrating hit away cannot be influenced by the player either. Using the Spearhead mod in CoH2 made the Brummbar my favorite tank. Okay it doesn't have the best speed, armor, range, but the sheer destruction the pomf gun can deliver is hilarious.

Well, I don't have a list, but still there was Sudden strike, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II and Blitzkrieg - with literally millions of add-ons, and thats for starters. Tons of games about operation is Normandy like Axis & Allies. Some of them were good, some were shit, but EVERYBODY played it.

C&C clones - well, you got me here - I do not remember titles besides Dark Reing 1 & 2, second Z game, Earth 2150, State of War and and because is was like 15 years ago and almost all of them was the same - build a base, gather all of your power with mouse and send them to destroy enemy base. Boring, especially when compared to games like Startopia.

The pacing and feel of the game is completely different, for starters, but to make it short:

Somehow you play CoH and CoH2 and CoH LOOKS BETTER than the sequel. The models are pretty, the textures are sharp, and the explosions, effects and physics are incredible. In CoH2 everything looks like the default explosion of Source Engine.

The sound in CoH2 is like a fat guy blowing through a pipe. Everything sounds muffled and not crisp enough.

The dialogues in CoH were full of little details and charm to each faceless soldier. The characterization was so good it felt like a DoW1 sequel in a WW2 setting. IT was impressive.

The meta of the game shifted a lot in CoH1, but it was more about positioning and controlling a map. CoH2 feels like a mixture of SC2 with cover mechanics, lots of rushing without the fine pacing the first had.

Literal p2w mechanics on an RTS game filled with DLC. They adressed it but it's not the same.

It just is. It's not even close, IMO.

CoH2 has a lot of problems, starting with:

1. Too much indirect fire. Between how immediately everyone gets mortars, and the relative accuracy and power of mortars, and then all of the artillery that's available starting in mid-game, every match feels like the Scheldt now.

2. Handheld flamers in CoH2 are inexplicably bad at cleaning out garrisons, and machine guns switch windows in garrisons too quickly. Between that and the stupid Russian FHQ, the early game becomes a race to grab the building with the best windows.

3. The maps in the automatch rotation are bad, bad bad. This is particularly true in team games, but there are numerous issues with the maps that compound points 1 and 2. They have a fascination with making maps that have you playing for opposite points of the diamond, for instance. Then there are the mud and deep snow terrain features, which are absolutely terrible and discourage offensive play. If you want to discourage someone from pushing on your shit, that's what fucking machine guns, emplacements, armor, wire, and goddamn infantry units are for.

4. Armor costs in the late game are too low compared to fuel income. Late game, the armor just keeps coming. It's like they gave everyone Allied War Machine, except it's actually just that you can build a shitload of fuel caches and keep dumping out more goddamn heavy tanks.

Both games have specific balance issues, but CoH isn't nearly as fundamentally flawed as CoH2 in terms of overall game design. The only thing that sticks out as being incredibly bad core design in CoH is the British faction, and well, Brits are for fucking no-skill blobbing fags, so don't play them.

In my opinion its Faces of War. You get a nice little campaign for each nation, brits, france, us and germany i think it is and its not the recycled garbage like in men of war assault squad. Men of War original i think had a decent campaign too, also has the Dynamic Campaign Generator mod which is a cunt to get to work but worth it once it does. Like the other anon said, red tide is good and so is condemned heroes.

Stay away from Assault Squad and Assault Squad 2 if you want single player though, they are dog shit recycled corridor maps for each nation, just reskinned. Although maybe there is decent steam workshop sp maps out for it by now i'm not sure.

Also to the op, never underestimate normies ability to ruin any genre of games. All it takes is for them to find one simplified formula that catches on and they will spam out copy pasted retard games like you wouldnt imagine.

He'll have one infantry squad less than you, and unless you'd literally only spammed MG teams with poor mobility, something that indirect fire should actually counter, you can simply advance to negate his mortar or get indirect fire of your own. Mortars, after all, are only effective against static targets. I won't even bother with static artillery emplacements, absolute waste of manpower unless you're bombarding a schwere or taking out a british sim city.

I just came up with numerous specific flawed issues with the game, such as the relative power of indirect fire weapons across the board, terrible map design (see: General Mud and Oka River Winter for specific maps that include listed complaints), and the cheapness of late game armor compared to resource income.

I could go on pointing out many issues with CoH2 that have to do with overall gameplay quality, such as the fact that units tend to bunch up in cover more and that even tanks with AP shells can instagib an entire squad pretty easily because of it.

I mean, do you want specific balance complaints? First of all, we're talking about a Relic game that's still being patched, so that's going to swing wildly from one patch to the next. But at this specific moment?

1. US mortars are clearly an issue.

2. The Sturmtiger is pretty ridiculous if the OKW player uses the reverse key. If it's going to be an instakill on whatever it hits, it shouldn't be nearly that accurate.


I mean, compare that to CoH 1, where the only legit complaints about balance are pretty much confined to team games, and the most obvious one (they broke snipers in the final patch) isn't a decisive advantage for either side, since both Wehr and US get that unit.

It's basically "ALLIES MUST WIN IN 20 MINUTES OR GG" - the mechanic. All the kraut has to do is hang on until that sweet, sweet offmap vet 3 tiger that can 1v8 Shermans and that counters its own direct counter (AT guns) because its stupid accuracy and damage can blow the gun.

Not to mention vet 3 Grens with MG42s are fucking spammable.

Defensive is easier than offensive. Even if you take 3/4s of the map that offmap tiger is only 900 manpower, and if all you're building is MG nests and mortars you'll have plenty of fuel and MP to buy vet. A competent player could save that up even on the back foot.

Allied players have a fucking massive "WIN OR ELSE" hanging over their heads, and they don't even have that strong early game. Volks with MP40s supported by an MG42 squad will devastate rifleman pre-BAR.

but it's not it only one shots anything thats a medium tank or weaker
any call in heavy tanks survive a direct impact with half health and some part of the tank broken, and you have to get pretty close to fire unless it's a high vet level which makes it really easy to flank it on retreat

But German small arms from WW2 are the best small arms that have ever been made, and everybody who is anybody knows that, and you should care, because your Amerifat weapons are 1-for-1 copies of the Reich's marvels of engineering. The MG60 that Americans are so proud of is basically the MG42's bastard delinquent child, and the AK47 is an inferior Soviet version of the indisputably single greatest weapon ever made, the STG-44. In fact the stamped receivers of the STG-44 were folded so many times that they were harder than steel, a technique that the Soviets couldn't copy, which is why despite being exactly the same design AK-47s are as reliable as your erection whereas STG-44s are as reliable as mine.

this is usually because you're on the wrong side of the cover. the tank hits the wall/whatever and the explosion is right there where your guys are, making them a lot easier to hit than if they were just out in the open. if you are on the correct side of cover, you don't get hit by tanks all that much

yeah us mortars are stupid, I never understood the point of them. one thing I don't like about coh 2 is this unit creep, to the point that all factions now have mines, at guns, hmgs and mortars. it really takes something away, but most retards are of the opinion that more of everything is good

sturmtiger is somewhat triggering, the only thing I don't like is how it can shoot through shot blockers, that's totally retarded on certain maps

AS2 is better simply because mechanically it's the most improved plus it has the most alive modding scene so all the campaign mods are there. Matter of fact you can download the faces of war and red tide campaigns straight off the workshop and they play the same (no cutscenes inbetween missions but mission dialogue works just fine.) They even had the condemned heroes campaign at some point but the modder abandoned that one so it's gone.
