MGS3 has most of it's eggs into the ending basket, which frankly I didn't get hit as hard by as others. But I'll agree that MGS3 ending is great and it's very well done and all, but I feel like I was a lot more enthralled emotionally in MGS1. Grey Fox's story and death, Naomi, Sniper Wolf's death, actually a lot of the bosses and characters in MGS1 feel more fleshed out and have more tragic stories than they were in MGS3, so I was getting that emotional 'high' a lot more often throughout MGS1 than MGS3, and the more drab, cold tone and atmosphere in MGS1 supports it as well, where MGS3 sort of conflicted with it.

MGS was praised for its story, and so was MGS2 and 3, you probably weren't born at the time but yes people made a big deal about MGS games story and talked more about it then they talked about the gameplay since it was always a secondary aspect to the MGS series.

The problems with 2, in spite of some of the gameplay improvements were pretty horrible. Worst of all it was "Daddy Issues: The Game". Aside from Mordin. And I'll never forgive them for removing the Mako sections and being able to just jerk around on planets. The horrible resource gathering minigame replacement was painful.

If you're going to keep going with the comparison to Mega Man and Mega Man X, that's a completely different case. That was when new gameplay elements and technological capabilities radically advanced the series to a new future that while is still built upon the original's systems, it's was a major shift and ultimately there's a major discord between the two in terms of level design, character progression, and so on.
For anyone that has played all the Metal Gear games, they know this isn't the case. The shift from MG2 to MGS, while having nearly a decade between the two, did not result in a radical change in game design due to new technologies. Despite the massive amount of options the player now had with the third dimension and the new methods of stealth maneuvers that technology wrought, it was still a linear progression of design from MG2 that held very much of the same, right down to the point that MGS's main discord from MG2 is merely the presence of 3D, while level design, player progression, enemy encounters, and much more remains the same. This is reinforced by the existence of Ghost Babel, which brings the series back to 2D for a Game Boy release, adds many elements of MGS (ultimately resulting in it being marketed as MGS for Game Boy in some regions), and still holds the same design that the rest has.
So ultimately, "Solid" is only really good for denoting the fact that it has 3D. Anyone who really uses it to denote a new line of games separate from the originals usually is just obnoxiously ignorant of the original games.
