I coordinated effort between /v/, r/gaming, and r/4Chan spread false lies about Battleborn whilst hyping up Overwatch is what happened.
A potential buyer hearing legions of alt accounts saying the game is dead prevented a lot of sales and discouraged current owners from playing or even talking about the game since they'd just get pelted with insults and memes.
It's disgusting how denizens of the internet can literally cost people and their families their livelihoods for the "lulz"

It's 5 vs 5, so as long as there are 9 other people playing, you will find a game. I paid $80 for it and have 171 hours in game so it was definitely worth the price.

Honestly bear with it. It's still suffering from issues, but the devs are apparently making an effort to correct what they can without offending their fucking marketing overlords, or whoever's preventing from cleaning up their art style. The player count is low and it is a problem, but it's actually not that bad when you're not trying to queue up at 2 am pacific time. No worse than playing league, dota, or whatever, at times.
Some players are crying for a f2p model. I might be up for it if they actually have the fucking brains to find a way to do it without pissing all over their paying playerbase.

Dotalikes had already peaked and were/are sinking fast. Gearbox didn't see the writing on the wall and went all in on gameplay people simply didn't want anymore. Overwatch is probably at least a little to blame; but Gearbox simply has a lot of ill will towards them as well. they are an inconsistent dev.

Gearbox could have avoided a lot of the overwatch comparisons early on by simply spending their time educating potential buyers on the differences. As it stands the game's only real hope is to work on a F2P conversion alongside a reenergized marketing push.

The initial numbers weren't awful. If these people still enjoyed playing the game, then why aren't all of them still playing? Instead they spent that time reinforcing the belief that the two games were the same by starting twitter fights with OW. Gearbox wanted to show that they had ATTITUDE and gave no fucks but in the end, caring more about their image as "bad boys" came at the expense of properly advertising their game.
