It became Reddit the game and the worst part is I think disliking it is somewhat of an unpopular opinion. When 4 came out I hated the series because despite 3 being playable 4 just looked like a shitty memefest. They didn't significantly improve them. They should of taken all of that creativity and put it towards making a really energetic open world. Stuff like, assassins stalking your tracks and ambushing you, enemies that creatively ambush you, any kind of cool or zany chance encounter you could think of, really. Open worlds come to life when there's lots of cool, colourful possibilities to encounter within them.
They're also waaaay too easy, you never have to make creative use of what they give you, you just mindlessly gun down most enemies without a whole lot of thought (maybe this improved a little, but you're still nearly immortal in all of them anyways).
They also kept the same shitty feeling engine, while GTA has had a pretty lively and impressive physics engine for a while now. Crashing off bikes in SR feels really cheap and underwhelming, same with falling from high heights.

I'm playing through SR2 for the first time and while it is more serious than 3 or 4, I feel like it's kind of heavy-handed. The death of Carlos didn't affect me at all. I'm supposed to care about a character dying that I haven't even interacted with for more than five minutes total? The game didn't make me invested in him as a character.
It also feels too much like a run-of-the-mill GTA clone.

It had a good story, but for some reason the rest of the game was meh to me. I can't remember a lot of the missions, but I remember being pretty bored and taking a break from the game and one day noticing it in steam and finishing it because I had nothing else to do.

Saints Row 2 is my favorite open world game of all time. Only other game that comes close to it is San Andreas. 3 was garbage and I didn't even get through the whole game before dropping it. Never bothered with 4.

I still enjoyed 3. I embraced the fact they wanted to be completely off the wall. 2 played between serious and goofy, absolutely perfectly. The craziness for the sake of craziness is what gives 3 it's charm. No need to side with characters, just enjoy the ride.
