Most moves to handheld, while only a few major studios still survive making "safe" games with little to no business risk. That's why all innovation and creativity moved to mobile.
At the same time, the mobile market is collapsing in Japan. DS and PSP sales combined were about 52 million in Japan. 3DS and Vita sales combined are 26 million, and both handhelds are at the end of their life.
In the meantime, mobile gaming is skyrocketing, and we see Japanese developers jumping ship to mobile left and right.
Some Japanese devs have a couple of franchises with global appeal and will stick it out and make games for the PS4. Niche developers are starting to migrate to PC, where they have a smaller install base but more dedicated fans. For the rest, it's basically riding on Nintendo to resurrect the industry with the NX like they did with the NES. If they can't do it, the Japanese game industry will be a mobile shitshow.

There is an upcoming game based on the anime called Puzzle and Dragons X. The screens with Bastet in them also show Ace (the anime and game's main character). I don't have them with me as I had no reason to save the pictures but they are out there.
Ace has a fusion with her in the main PAD game and there's no reason to advertise that if it's not in the game and anime.

Most leads nowadays, even some newer collab silvers, can do 90% of the content by themselves with mediocre teams thanks to power creep. After that 90% is done, a lot of people stop bothering with PAD altogether, which is when the grinding really begins regardless if you IAP or not.

Honestly though, I'd take a million dumb little gimmick games like the one where you lead the spirit of a man to space after he dies while listening to his life story, or a pokemon knockoff where all of the pokemon are old men who used to be human according to flavor text, over a single, tired TPS adventure game where you're forced to watch a boring story play out and then they might let you shoot a few scripted enemies or climb a wall if you're good and wait for half an hour.

The formula was created by the west, adopted by Japan, and then abandoned by the west because it was literally just a stopgap solution for the time between the creation of computers and the time computers were decent enough to run things in real time, or with much more complexity.
Japan, meanwhile, has always floundering with the same stock first person dungeon crawlers and DraQue clones. It works "well enough", and it costs nothing to make, so they keep doing it.
When you think of early adoption of 3D, only Nintendo were doing anything interesting in Japan with Mario and Zelda. Every other stand-out title from that gen in terms of gameplay was western.
