Yeah I was never crazy about Ghostbusters either. Saw the first movie and it was okay, didn't watch the sequel, and didn't finish the game that is considered Ghostbusters 3 because i got it from Blockbuster along with fallout 3 (which took up more of my time.)

Its one of those movies that has so often been imitated and referenced so often that a person seeing it today for the first time probably isn't going to get the same experience that people did 30+ years ago.
It also helps if you know that the typical lovecraftian horror story has a north eastern intellectual stumble across forbidden arcane knowledge and then is either destroyed by it or has to use the supernatural to delay the threat.
In Ghostbusters the north eastern intellectuals become blue collar shlubs whose forbidden arcane knowledge winds up not really mattering because they use their technology to defeat the supernatural threat.

Gremlins 2 was all Joe Dante though, he knew exactly what he was doing and it's basically him taking the piss of the original and going wild with the concept. The reasons a lot of the new gremlins look unique is also because he let the animatronic people and effect people do whatever they wanted as well. It's like saying Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was ruined by some outside force because it's silly when Tobe Hooper wanted it that way.
