pokemon has always been popular but in the later 2000s and 2010s it's nowhere near as popular as it was in the 90s. Not niche but also not normie. I've seen dozens of normie friends of mine who haven't played a game since gold or ruby suddenly sperging out about pokemon with the release of this game, even people who have never played the main series games seem to be shitting their pants over it.
As for why it's so popular it's 3 things:
