N64 did great in America but bombed everywhere else.
Sega Saturn did great in Japan but bombed everywhere else.
Playstation was the only console that aggressively courted the European market while also doing very well in the US and Japan.
It's really too bad Sega fucked up the Sega Saturn's US launch so badly. It was probably always doomed to third place, but it didn't have to be a loser. It could have done as well in the US as it did in Japan if it had a good launch lineup and if Sega had bothered translating all the top-shelf Japanese games instead of focusing squarely on its crippled 3D capabilities.

I don't have any experience with the Playstation, so I won't say anything about them. However, I feel the Saturn deserved to be it's number one competitor. Think about it, Nintendo stuck with cartridges when everyone else was going to CD's which backfired immensely. FF7 could've been a killer app for the N64 but because of poor decision making, it ended up on Playstation. However, if Sega played smart with the Saturn's launch and gave devs more time to make games, it surely would've ended up in the spot it was in back in the 90's.
