So what makes Winston good? I've tried using him but his gun is so fucking weak.

He's not that wrong though. Zarya is a really strong, popular pick at ranks 70+, and pharah is balanced as long as the map is designed well, but that's clearly not the case.Fuck people who pick Pharah on Hollywood.

Winston is used to harass squishies and healers. He has that low cooldown leap so you can hop in there, fuck shit up, and get out.
You need to drop your shield to strategically block yourself from enemy fire while you focus on your main target. His weapon does 50 damage/second so generally you have to keep it on a squishy for 4-5 seconds to kill them. If you're operating as part of a group, you should be harassing Reinhardts to drop their shield as it can't block your weapon.
Also if you're in there for the long haul, be sure to use your leap to jump straight up and come down on your enemies. It helps disrupt them. You can also shock and punch while leaping, meaning you can chase down pharahs and mercy's.
Roadhogs and Reinhardts are your counter when you're solo. Do not attempt to engage them without back up and don't go near them if you don't have your E ready.
Use your mobility to clinch vital kills (ala killing mercy early on means no rez after the big battle) and just annoy the shit out of snipers and other squishies.
