Can you have horror without the dreaded anticipation of a jump scare around the next corner?

Yes.
>>
Japan does it best. Just wait for them to catch on.
>>
>>344757789
Yes, it mostly relies on atmosphere though and after some time you get used to it.
Shit. I couldnt finish the marine campaign as a kid in AvP 1 because that fucking pinging scared the fuck out of me.

Soma and the first Amnesia also had some nice atmosphere.
>>
Yes, It's called Resident Evil 6. The point of the game is to face your fears and stand up to them. For example on No Hope in Chris campaign try defeating all Napads in the mansion just before your team dies, don't run to the door. You probably won't have any ammunition by that point and will have to use your knife and hands. Bonus points for agent hunt enabled.
>>
>>344757998
>AvP 1
you mean the Jaguar version? I own it and I don't remember the pinging being very noticeable compared to the later games.
>>
Depends on the player, not the game. An expertly paced balance of tension and release is critical to a horror game, though.
>>
I don't remember any jump scares in Silent Hill 1-3 and those games are fucking brilliant and scary
>>
>>344760746
Silent Hill 2 definitly has jumpscares.
in the aparment when you enter one of the rooms you get a loud noise and a creature standing up.
>>
>>344760746

First mannequin appearance in 2. Best jump scare I've ever seen and it takes advantage of the creature's appearance but it's a jump scare.

>>344760905
I don't really see it as a jump scare. but it's not like whole game is "OHMYGOD WHAT IF ANOTHER MANNEQUIN GET UP?!?" it's more about the atmosphere. so I think it's a legit answer for OP
>>
>>344761078

Just because it's well executed doesn't mean it's not a jump scare. Yes, there's more nuance to it than the OOGA BOOGA factor for sure - it's jarring that the very first thing you see when you get your flashlight is a pair of legs sewn on top of another pair of legs getting up and attacking you to zero musical fanfare but by its very nature it's a brief jolt to the system, it's very jump scare like. If anything, I think it's an example of how to do them right - jump scares aren't inherently bad, they're just easy to abuse by creators who lack tact.
>>
>>344757789
Yes.
Silent Hill 1-4 are an excellent proof of this.
>>
>>344757823
To be honest I was expecting jump scares in it
>>
>>344757823
Yes, it's not scary at all.
>>
>>344760746
>running through fog while nightmarish creatures screech and wail
>occasionally stumble upon them
>no jumpscares

this is really the board with the lowest iq
>>
>>344761615
4? 4??? I hate that game. at that point Silent Hill went to shit. You run through game with unkillable ghosts and when you get through all "levels" you need to run through it again, only this time, there are more ghost, unkillable boss of the game with guns and IT'S FUCKING ESCORT MISSION!
>>
But there are jumpscares that actually are good though?

The problem is cheap jumpscares and relying completely on them. Using them once in a while is fine, as long as the overall setting of the game is horror focused.

This is also true for movies.
>>
>>344761774

Now those aren't jumpscares. That stupid little hidden bit where a lying figure is flung from behind the town sign in 2, MAYBE. Even then, you almost have to trigger that one on purpose.
>>
Sound plays a huge factor in creating a truly suspenseful environment. Think the regenerators in RE4. I can still hear their breathing.
>>
>>344761950
those are the definition of jumpscares you fucking retard

some of them literally jump at you from the fog
>>
>>344761848
What does your personal preference have to do with jumpscares?
>>
>>344757789
Horror is a genre. Not the concept of scary.

Look at films;
Hellraiser
Evil dead
Dawn of the dead
The thing
Saw
Event horizon
Cabin fever

All horror films, not scary though.
The term Horrific means just that, it encapsulates multiple meanings of the phrase.

Locking on to 1 thing and saying all horror games must be like that is a horrible way to do things.

The evil within is a horror game
Slender the arrival
Resident evil
Silent hill
Dead island
Condemned
Dead space

All primarily horror games. Slap whatever subcategories you want onto them.
They approach the horrific requirement in different ways but they are all horror games.
You can have scares, you don't have to.

Horror game bread and butter is simply
Atmosphere
>You have to get your audience to immerse themselves and believe they are there somewhat
Sound design
>Key element, the sound needs to work for the game
Suspense
>"What is going to happen" something everyone wonders, how to handle this question is where devs fall short and jump scares come from.

On the subject of jump scares though; they can be done right. whether is when the person least expects it or when the tension is at an all time high and it's a decent pay off.

Try some free indie horror games they either bang the nail on the head or make it laughable.
Texas drill massacre -
Amazing horror game styled like the 90's killer flicks, fantastic all round build up and the "jump scare" is well deserved

Courage -
Just downright bad, you'll start laughing at the jumpscares soon enough

It's not Dead Space levels but there are definitely jump scares in the Silent Hill games.

Irritatingly it even has non-event jump scares. You'll just be in some room mashing the x button on all the furniture and suddenly there's a loud crash for no particular reason and then nothing happens afterwards. Silent Hill doesn't just have jump scares, it has the worst kind of jump scares.

They telegraph they're presence from a mile away via radio white noise. Are you retarded?

>Jump scares aren't scary

When will this meme end?
>>
>>344762056

Except they aren't because they're usually slower creatures and you can make them out in the fog before they make you out most of the time. SH1's dogs and gargoyles might fuck your shit up by surprise but I don't see it being an occurrence worth noting in 2 or 3, even though 3 had dogs as well. In all honesty the radio static kind of diminishes whatever impact enemies hiding in a fog could have for jump scares most of the time.

I truly don't think a "horror" atmosphere can exist without the anticipation of a jump scare. Even if there is no jump scare, just thinking it might be there is what people find scary.

The only single aspect of a video game that can be scary without a jump scare is the use of a time limit. Being underwater and unable to find an exit, for example.
>>
You don't need jumpscares for scary shit.

Just make situations like Silent Hill loves to make

Like that room with the mirror on SH3 (I think). It's like a jumpscare but it lasts more than 30 seconds.
>>
>>344761667
The plague can sneak up on you sometimes though, especially when the Angels start appearing
>looting a house
>calmly sneaking around the infectious clouds
>take too long checking cupboards
>surprise!

>>344761693
>Yes, it's not scary at all.
Pretty fucking horrifying, though.
Bachelor Day 6, the Albino?
>>
>>344762158
because jumpscare in movies is never prepared through use of sound , isn't it you fucking retard
>>
>>344762674
>day 6

i can't walk that far, but the thought of 'playing' pathologic for so long is scary
>>
>>344762427

I'm going to assume that scene is actually scary in the context of the whole movie...

Also, big stupid smiles are not scary. I've noticed that shit popping up in a lot of horror movies recently and I don't get it, it just looks silly and immediately kills the mood. To me it's the equivalent of expecting me to find someone slipping on a banana peel terrifying, it's just not going to happen.
>>
>>344763081
Yeah, of course I posted that, assuming people had actually seen the movie, and I can see now how it really isn't that creepy if you haven't seen it.

That said, it's a pretty good horror movie, considering the load of horseshit horror movies that are being made these days.
>>
>>344763031
I know that feel
Not that it's boring but something prevents me from playing it for too long
