Nuzlocke is basically a personal set of rules to abide by when playing the game. Some guy made up the term for it. The basic rules are this
>You can only catch the first pokemon you encounter in each new location/route
>If it faints or runs, then too bad
>If a pokemon you're using faints, you have to either box it forever or release it
>If you ever white out outside of your introductory battle, Game Over
It adds some more difficulty to the game and allows you to use pokemon you might normally never bother using.

It's the same with every game, anon. There are casuals and hardcore players.
Casuals pick the pokemon they like, go through the story, maybe battle or trade with a friend, beat the game, clear up some of the post game, then retire.
Hardcore players enjoy the main/post game, then start breeding and trading for the best mons to maximize stats, IVs, EVs, Natures...so they can do competitve battling right.
I'm a causal. Never could be bothered with all the breeding shit.
