I'm a programmer.
What's better for me, to learn 2D or 3D as to make games?
>>
>>344687330
its fucking difference between having 2 variables and 3 for every object you dumb fuck
>>
2D: no z
3D: z

a programmer can't figure that out???
>>
>>344687330
If you want a job, 3d.
If you are a lone wolf, 2d.
>>
>>344687330
if you even have to ask this, then you probably arent a (good) programmer
>>
>>344687330
2D is easier, sprites are much simply for a rank amateur to manage than 3D models, which require texture mapping, rigging, and animation.

If you're not handling the graphics, then 2D is still simpler, if only because of what >>344687535 says.

So, if you want to realistically crank out a game fast, go 2D. But 2D games still get looked down upon by the masses, so if you're trying for something more relevant to the modern industry (maybe for a porfolio or whatever) then 3D is what you need.

>>
>>344687330
Even if you want to specialize in 2D development you're still basically required to learn how to manipulate 3D space. Even when solely using 2D assets.
>>
>>344688019

>But 2D games still get looked down upon by the masses

not if you're making phone games
>>
>>344687330
Both.
>>
>>344687330
make a 2spooky walking simulator in unity to gain xp.

make an rpg in RPGmaker

than put your bigboy pants on and actualy make something worth playing.

and remember

NO ATARI PIXELS
>>
>>344688019
>the only alternatives are retro pixel art or AAA modern 3D
>what is low poly
come on nigga.
>>
>>344688359
If you're making phone games, you don't really need to know how to program, either.

anyway, nobody is hiring programmers for them because each one is so simple they already have all the team members they need. And if you're hoping to start your own mobile game, you won't profit, because the price of user acquisition is so high that all the small-time devs got muscled out.
>>
>>344687330

assembly.
>>
>>344687330
Anon, the solution is obvious. Make 4D games.
>>
>>344689152
that looks like a psychedelic 3d game
>>
>>344687330
If you can program in C++ then getvGame Maker Studio and make some 2D games.
>>
>>344687330
Depends on what you wanna do

if you wanna do isometric just do 3D. you're gonna hate your life because you'll be redrawing shit 4 times otherwise, if you're lucky. if you wanna do a sidescroller 2D is simple to do.

3D has a higher skill floor but after like 1-2 days in blender you'll be able to make and texture simple 3d objects.
>>
>>344688770
Low poly still requires texture mapping, rigging, and animation. Still more work than 2D. And still won't get you any job offers, or appeal to the casuals. It's the same gamble on nostalgia as making a sprite-based game, except more work.

which is a damn shame, because I love it. But I understand why people don't bother.
>>
>>344689152
Thats not 4D you retard.
>>
>>344689449
>he can't think in 4 dimensions
>>
>>344689338
but that's completelly wrong dumbass.

low poly is literally easier than pixel art.

you can make a full character or prop in a few minutes, rigging included.
>>
>>344689449
It is as close to 4 dimensions as can be represented in 3.
>>
>leran 2D or 3D

they share 90% of shit

I guess start with 2D if you really want to
>>
What programmer doesn't know how to Google a stupid question like this?
>>
There's a million tutorials on Unity 3D, so you'll have an easier time learning it, but 2D is easier to actually do.

Something like this.
>>
>>344688019
How plausible is making 3D sprites into a 2D game a la RCT. Making models is simple and traced, and making sprites, especially animations, seems like a whole unique skill.
>>
>>344690034
there's no diference between a 2D sprite made by hand and a 3D render.

also most engines now support 3D.
>>
>>344689638
show me how.

remember, you have to be an absolute beginner with no experience at 3D modeling, that's where we start the timer. Because that's where OP is, obviously. I don't care if Mr. Polycount Regular can shit out low-poly goodness on the daily, that's irrelevant to the current topic.
>>
>>344689638
Crappy low-poly is almost always harder than crappy pixel art due to the reasons >>344689338 gave. Unless it's Minecraft-tier, it's going to need actual UV mapping and rigging, which takes more time than basic sprite animations.
>>
>>344689152
trying to understand this messes with my mind so much

I just made a full character sprite, running and neutral animation included. Took me about 2 minutes because I had to decide on the colors.

How much can you get done in 2 minutes?

Learn to not be depressed or get stressed out.
Those are the top two skills for a video game designer per my uncle at Raven Soft.
>>
>>344687330
The best way would be focus full on programming and have a design/artfag to do all the sprite/model work, if youu want to do everything yourself, then 2d

>>344690585
most of the time for low poly shit you simply need reference.

>>344690750
most low poly shit is done tracing photos and drawings.

>>344691405
no shit nigga.
This took me like one hour and it looks better than most indie shit.
low poly is easy as fuck.

>UV meme
use zbrush or mudbox to paint the textures.

mudbox is literally photoshop for 3D.
>>
>>344691819
He was comparing low effort art. Sprites are obviously easier than models if you're super lazy. That's why every indie game has "retro" "pixel" "art".

>>344691724
Then he should do a 1-D game. Half the work of a 2-D game.

Furry porn games especially. The guy who makes Rack gets over 90k a year, and Breeding Season brings in almost 400k a year.
>>
>>344692474
Being able to traverse in X,Y,Z axis is being able to traverse in 3 dimensions
Being able to traverse time would be a 4th dimension.

>>
>>344690034
3d on 2d is literally ff7, they chopped the model into sprites though

at least thats what i've heard, i'm guessing alot of things do use 3d models like big robots, and everything in the combat mode.
