You should wait for Ys Origin and 1&2 to go on a steam sale. They probably have the most passable stories all together, and you get pretty much the only acceptable version of the bumb combat system in 1&2. Origin is just great all around.

I mean, besides 1 and 2, the games had pretty much no coherent overlying repeating mythos or concepts until VI onwards.

And even then I'm not so sure since I played all 3 Ys 4 games and Celceta, although it is officially canon now, seems like the worst game of bunch and the whole thing seemed to have just taken a gigantic liberty with how much extra stuff they packed and didn't explain properly.
