In DMC1 and 3 Dante is half human and half demon. In DmC he's half angel and half demon. It can't be a prequel when it completely changes Dante's background like that.

Gameplay and enemy mechanics were shit in DmC though
Color coded enemies break the gameplay flow, you have to stop attacking and do something specific to get rid of them.
In DMC4 you don't have to stop for anything except those lightning lizards I forget the name of, everybody agrees they're shit, and there are only 3 of them in the entire game.
The reason for this difference in enemy design is that in DmC, since it's so easy to do infinite air juggle combos, they couldn't find a way to make enemies threatening to the player without this color coded bullshit or "you can only attack this enemy from behind" shit or etc. DMC4 does not have this problem and is plenty difficult because it's very difficult to stay airborne for any length of time unless you get ridiculous with enemy step cancelling which takes years of practice.

Wrong. DMC4 had mediocre level design and the backtracking was atrocious, yes. But it has better weapons, better controls, far more variety, a skill ceiling that towers above DmC, better enemies, better bosses, more likeable characters as not everyone's an asshole, and most importantly it isn't casual shit.
DmC is good for if you play through a game's story once for a mindless experience, for lack of a better term, and that's all. DMC4 is a game which challenges you at all levels and has the depth of an ocean compared to DmC's paddling pool. If you're the kind of the person who thinks gameplay should be skippable then I can see why DmC might appeal to you, but then you're also a colossal shit-eating faggot.

style switching was cool but choosing styles in dmc3 also had a lot of merit, choosing styles and equipment loadout made dmc3 much more interesting because you could experiment with different playstyles/loadouts for different areas; removing limitations isn't inherently a good thing
giving dante all his styles on the fly made the game too easy and since dante's campaign was just a repeat of nero's he doesn't have any enemies designed with style switching in mind
also giving dante the ability to switch styles made switching for babby's first dmc character nero to infinitely complex dante really jarring for the first few times, dmc3 was much better paced for fresh playthroughs

That's the point. Them being locked is the same idea as how you can only have one weapon out in a shooter.
The styles give you a set number of responses to any situation, when you switch you get a new set which may be better or worse for your current situation.
The game is built so that at the lower difficulties a player who only makes use of Blademaster can beat the whole thing. But it's on higher difficulties, and when chasing SSS ranks that using the other styles becomes important.
I get your point that they could've just put all the commands onto Dante at one time, but I don't think leaving them an input away, especially the way 4 did it, is bad by any means.

the only thing separating the more highly "skilled" players you see from DMC4 is literally only the fact that they can handle the overtly cumbersome controls well enough that their finger gymnastics can match what they already imagine up in their head- the actual moves like jumpcancels arent hard to pull off for anyone
its extremely clunky to have to press the D pad multiple times within one combo especially when you add these 2 extremely stupid design oversights into the system

I don't even have a problem with Donte in this game and the gameplay is, while not DMC good, good. The problems I had were with the story and characters like Vorgil. your average bloodborne weapon has a moveset of about 15-25 moves
the "depth" of combat doesnt come from the total actions you can do- bloodborne has the stamina, rally and lockon which influences the type of dodge you use (do you choose distance or a smaller hitbox ((dash or roll))
Then you bring in the actual enemies which bring in the meat of the "depth"
also im partial to those games because a game involves more things than their pure combat mechanics which is exactly why I think Ludwig from bloodborne is the best boss fight of all time so far in any videogame- it perfectly combines the narrative of bloodborne into the boss, the boss has a rich backstory, its an extremely powerful introduction to what is post maingame content, the boss is extremely well designed not only visually but gameplay wise: it never has a blindspot where it starts to track you in a desperate attempt to use its premade lunges because it has a humongous pool of moves for any angle, and then you get the midfight transformation...

you need to kill enemies before to get essense and you need to do additional actions to stop essense from being absorbed
essense doesn't last forever, like 30 seconds or something
only a few encounters/enemy mix ups allow you to just charge UT in a corner without essense and even then it has more to do with the enemies being slow or more passive than most
3RE completely removes essense altogether and replaces with a bloody rage which has a requirement to trigger that is more tougher than essense ever will
Razor's Edge completely removes UT's that could be triggered even without hitting the enemies

Bloodborne encounters largely boil down to getting in, getting hits, and dipping out. All Souls combat is pretty lacking in comparison to a proper hack n slash game, it's not even really aiming to be the same thing. All Souls are more about putting thought into every single action and making sure you don't get punished for reckless play.
You're not really chaining all those different moves together for combos in BB. They do give you a lot of options but a lot of them are situational.
