2 is bad for a variety of reasons. The biggest change is from traditional leveling to a TES system where your stats get improved as you use them. It's not an inherently bad system, but it's completely botched because it's grind heavy and unbalanced as fuck. It also has a variety of smaller stupid design choices, like trap doors in every single dungeon, a largely pointless word system, and spells like teleport putting you in a critical state.

There's plenty of customization with the monsters, but both Serah and Noel serve their own unique niche roles. Noel has -strike Rav skills and is a shitty Sab, and Serah is the opposite. Paradigms can also be mixed up a bit with X and W, so the AI uses AoE skills more or less, but I never found it too important. It may be a big deal during the postgame because I never got gud enough to beat the DLC bosses.
It takes itself much less seriously if you got a little tired of the drama in 13.

It has a system that is very cool in theory, but it is atrocious in practice.
You improve stats based on what happens during fights.
So if you take a lot of hits, you will level up your health after a fight.
If you attack a lot your strength increases, but your magic decreases.
That stats can decrease is very interesting imo, gives a neat incentive to specialize characters and not have everyone be a spellsword.
The problem is that it's a jrpg and is very grindy.
The system is great in a game like morrowind where you can be content with increasing your skills as you travel and quest, but in ff2 you need to grind to progress.

You know how 13 is linear as balls? 13-2 is fairly non-linear. The main story is linear, but there is an absolute shit ton of side quests and side areas to do along the way as well. Serah is a far better protagonist than Lightning is, mainly because she actually has a personality. Encounters are random now instead of having enemies hand-placed in your way long the way, but most of the time they can be completely avoided as well. Combat is generally the same, though there were some tweaks made to make it feel more satisfying, and the Crystarium was vastly improved as well.
I quit 13 in Chapter 11 and just watched the rest of the cutscenes on Youtube to finish it, then went on to 13-2. 13 was unbearable after a while, but I thoroughly enjoyed 13-2. LR is good as well, but I'd personally place that above 13 but below 13-2.

Yeah, the storylines are on par with any single player JRPG and now that the game has gone through major changes is entirely soloable. You'll obviously miss out on the challenge and teamwork aspect that made many of the battles so endearing but the story itself is still great.
Be warned there is a LOT to go through, each expansion has a storyline or two, each nation has one, and then there are many other side quests and other storylines. I know someone played through most/all of it and put it all on youtube and it's fucking massive.
