Shin Megami Tensei if... Translation for the PlayStation when?
>>
>>344548969
Never literally ever literally. You'll just have to play the inferior SNES version and ENJOY IT.
What's with all the interest in this game lately?
>>
>>344548969
Why not just translate it yourself?
>>
Is there a worse fate for a videogame than being exposed to EOPs?
>>
>>344548969
We'll never know, Gideon will block you for asking even though he hasn't given an update for almost 2 years on it. Seriously it hurts.

>>
>>344549547
People probably want to play the game that inspired Persona
>>
>>344550305
Yeah, but I mean specifically in the last few days I have seen webms of this game, and a few different mentions of it.
>>

Maybe one person really wants to play it/likes it
>>
>>344548969

A bunch of things I never thought would be translated when I started studying Japanese a few years ago have been getting translated suddenly. Though I didn't really care about SMT back then, and it may be wearing off anyone, so one of you may have to take one for the team and start studying Japanese to make it happen.
>>
>>344550427

This one guy who named his MC Sly Cooper kept posting about it.

The Soul Hackers effect

>game is untranslated for years
>people get interested in it
>slowly hype it up despite having next to no knowledge about it (the best dungeons, the best story, etc.)
>game finally gets a translation
>defenders, contrarians, and disappointed people duke it out
>>
>>344550839
I liked Soul Hackers though. I didn't care about it before it came out though. But I've been wanting more SMT games after beating most of them
>>
It's all well and good learning Japanese but romhackers are total fucking faggots.
>Know Japanese and offer to translate literally thousands of lines of dialogue if somebody can put it into the game
>Romhackers shit on you for being an idiot because they want all the glory
>write up a shitty translation in notepad
>players shit on you for not hacking it into the rom

No wonder barely anything gets translated when this is what happens.
>>
>>344550975
I liked it too, I was just witness to the conversation surrounding it for the couple years before the localization. People liked to hype it up a lot and always cited the opinion of the singular person known as Japan.
>>
>>344551079
>Gideon Zhi claims like 50 translations a year and only does a couple of them
Nobody touches If... because of this.
>>
I'm honestly surprised that Atlus hasn't tried to bring the original games over in some sort of collection.
>>
>>344551243
I just wish he'd put up SOME sort of progress update for if... or atleast let us ask about it once because its almost 2 years
>>
>>344551519
He spoke about it relatively recently, he said he was playtesting it but none of the play testers bothered to finish the game.
>>
>>344551438
I'm guessing it's because it wouldn't sell
>>
>>344551438
1, 2, and if... are all on the Wii U/3DS eshop. I'm guessing that 1 iOS didn't sell enough here to justify the rest, a shame since I would have bought an Android version.

>>344551097
Doesn't that always happen, though?

I mean, shit, people were saying Type 0 was the best FF game ever, and it turned out to just be an okay game.

I really liked soul hackers, though. the combination of 90s computer bullshit, hackers, and smt is everything i could almost want from a game aesthetically. now everytime computers are involved in something, they take it too seriously and make all the machines too slick.
>>
>>344552148
Besides the story and setting, type 0 may have had the best combat out of all of the (action final fantasy) spinoffs, and a lot of playstyles to screw around with

Hopefully ff15 is that good
>>
>>344551965
God reading his twitter makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
>>
>>344552897
I don't disagree. I'm just saying people were praising it like the second coming of Jesus and EOPs wouldn't understand its greatness.

Anon, I used google. Every translation I've found is an old version. The fully finished English translation was done last month (https://twitter.com/cj_iwakura/status/740030408495005697). I've come upon several Romhacking links that are all come up as a year ago (or even farther back from before any final edits).
Furthermore, emuparadise gives me a translation that dates back to 2003. All available downloads from google searches are also Japanese only; I was looking for one that was pre-patched. I CAN patch it myself if need be, but I need to find the actual finished translation, which is proving to be somewhat difficult. I HAVE used Google. There's no need to be obtuse.
>>
>>344554483

Now that that other guy's made a complete ass of himself.

I looked, but I didn't find any pre-patched. Why not just grab a rom and patch it yourself?

If that's the case then I guess I'm SOL.
Really wish these old SMT games would released faster. Apparently Devil Children Black Book's translation first started in 2003 and its been constantly worked on by different people ever since.
>>
>>344559025
I have no proof on that, mind you. I just remember the confusion when Tom (another fan translator) would mention the translation and editing was done, but then people would come to him looking for a patch that wasn't there because he's not the hacker.

I've wanted to get into SMT franchise for quite some time. The old games look mega comfy, have interesting art style, and I love dungeon crawlers.

But from my search on th internet, it seems that almost none of them are translated.
Where could one start with the series? I've got an emulator and am not afraid to use it.
I would like to get one of the games on my phone as well for travelling and when I just want to lie in bed and play something easy and quick after the gym or something.
>>
So why was Dante in Nocturne?
>>
>>344562189
You should start with downloading Genki and learning hiragana/katakana and grammar. Just grind kanji every day while practicing and learning new grammar.
>>
>>344562189
SMT I and II are fan translated, Nocturne, SJ and IV all have western releases.

Emulate SMT I and II if you like old dungeon crawlers and go from there.

I don't think any of the phone ports are translated though.

SMT 1 is, but the phone ports are ios only.

Why did they only translate 1? Probably the same reason they only translated 2 out of the 3 early Persona games.

They don't know what the fuck they're doing.

But I just couldn't give it my all with school and shit.
Wanted to learn Jap some more over the summer, but didn't get to it yet (spent literally every waking minute of June working and now leaving on Wednesday for a week. Still, it won't be fast and good enough to play whole games, would it, even after 2 months of serious going.

>>
>>344562189
You can emulate P1, P2, and Strange Journey (they're all dungeon crawlers). SMT 1 is also officially translated, albeit only on iOS. There are probably fan TLs for the others, but I can't speak for their quality.
>>
>>344562189
You can play the official translation and best version of SMT1 if you have a apple device

The Persona games are so strange.

I don't remember fuck all about ...if or 1, but 2 is pretty batshit.

You fight mecha hitler on one of them.

If I remember correctly, the first one is about calling a phone number and saying someone's name, that person is then murdered.

The second one is where it goes off the rails. It's about rumors coming true. You call a number, tell it a rumor, it comes true. This actually happens in gameplay too. You call saying the bakery is secretly an arms dealer, next thing you know you can buy guns and swords at the bakery.

It plays a little different from 3/4 where each person, MC included, only have 1 persona. I'm incredibly hazy on the details but I do know shit gets real fucking weird real fast.

P3 and P4 are all about friends shit and midnight weirdness. It keeps the velvet room and such but not as expansive as it once was. I remember P2 having Igor and 2 other people in the velvet room with their own functions.

The games are all tied together, but not in a direct sequel way, but not like Final Fantasy either. It's... some weird shit and most of it is fan theory. I do like some of the ideas present though, it's curious and I'm interested to see how P5 handles those ideas.

I guess I may as well ask here: SMTIV was my first SMT. I've wanted to try the series since the announcement of FE x SMT as FE is my favorite franchise, and I literally just finished it less than 10 minutes ago. I thought it was fucking awesome, anyways, what SMT should I play next?
>>
>>344565663
HO HEE
>>
>>344569426

You fight alongside the demons and fuse in every mainline game.

You're not gonna get maps like that in any of the game though, Imagine's an MMO. The other games are all JRPGs. The closest you get to wandering around like that is an SMT4. And even that's more of a wander on the oveworld map as a marker, explore maps solo, demons show up for fights. But it's a kick back to the old games, it's just slightly animated portraits.
>>
>>344568289
I use the Snes9x emu for android and it runs perfectly fine, and my phone is a piece of shit. So maybe it's the emulator.

SMT III. Eventually try Digital Devil Saga, Strange Journey, and the first two.

>>
>>344569887
DON'T LISTEN TO CASUALS.
YOUR ROUTE IS BALLS TO THE WALL.
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei -> 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> Strange Journey -> DeSu/DDS/Raidou
Do whatever you want after Strange Journey, the series won't get any better. Also if you play the more... undeveloped games at first they will be much more enjoyable. SMT1 has some nice aspects like carefree fusion and carefree combat, something SMT IV doesn't have due to smirk.

Maybe he means that fusion in SMT II isn't anything to stress over because demons don't level or learn new skills.
>>
>If...
if what?
>>
>>344570763
In the sense that you only need to check the level of the resulting demon without needing to worry about skills or attributes. In SMT IV you have three demon attribute types, one which is practically unuseable in combat, for example. Planning fusions is complex, needing you to think more than twice before a fusion when you want to pass on a certain skill. This doesn't make the system bad per se, but it does make it alot deeper and complicated compared to the first game.
>>
>>344570964

Ah that. Yeah, that's true. I just fused everything willy-nilly in those two.
>>
>>344570763

Since the demons don't level and theirs skill are standardized per demon there's no real risk or concern with fusing.

With 4 you have inherited skills and then leveling them so your main character can learn those skills. It's more tedious that just fusing to get something that suits a role.

Rather than getting a pixie and knowing it's a low level healer, like in SMT1, you can fuck with the fusion mechanics to have a level 99 pixie with every stat maxed out and knowing whatever skills you want, if you're crazy enough to spend the time doing it.

It's one of the few things that makes SMT4 weird. On one hand, I like that i can keep my favorite demons viable through the whole game, on the other hand, when fusing to get new stuff it's a fucking mess because i'll end up with a melee tank that knows nothing but magic and healing skills.

Why on Earth did we put our faith in a man called Gideon?

Because he has done wonders in the past Anon. He and the DeJap guys gave us translations for games I thought we'd never play. But I mean here we are now. Feels bad man. At least Tomato isn't a total chode.

A better question would be: SMT I/II remake for the PS4 using the demon models from Persona 5 when?

I'd play it, but I'd want the old character designs over the redesigns. The SMT I and II artstyle was fucking glorious.

And the classic heroines look hotter than any of the modern ones.
Same for the demons.
