Give opinions, and tell your experiences with various brands.

Which one's to steer away from?
>>
>>344546808
stay away from real gamer brands like alienware and razer
>>
>>344546920
Why?
I want to know as much as I can, not rumors or unsubstantiated facts.
Thanks for input.
>>
>>344547159
They are overpriced as hell and too heavy to be considered portable. At that point you're better off building a desktop.

If you MUST have a laptop you can also play some games in, some brands have some mediocre videocards without all the dumb leds and bullshit (usually sold as multimedia laptops). The Lenovo Y50 is and example of a laptop under $1000 and you can play some newer games in decent settings while also not being a huge brick. You can find similar ones from other brands

Just buy the one with the best cpu/gpu to money ratio
>>
Stay away from gaming laptops in general. Unless you're someone who travels a fuckload they're not even remotely necessary.
>>
>>344546808
why do you need a gaming laptop?
>>
>>344546808
Wait for laptops with an external gpu port but then you will lose some mobility. Also buy a big laptop with a non-crippled cpu if you want to emulate.

Alienware laptop owner here. I've had mine for 3 years and have taken my "brick" everywhere from Afghanistan to Antarctica.

Compared to my previous laptop from Asus, which only survived 1 tour in Iraq where it sat on a desk in a AC building being pampered only to die on me 1 week after I get back.

My alienware on the other hand is durable as hell it sat for 2 years in a tent on a god for saken FOB in the middle of Afghanistan with no compressed air to clean it out for months. I watched apple and other laptops break within months of arriving.

Long story short if you travel alot like I do and need a durable laptop buy alienware, if you want cheap buy what ever people say.

>pic related its Antarctica
>>
Lenovo Y50 is pretty good.
>>
>>344549405
if you want a actually durable laptop just get a Thinkpad X220 or T420.
cheap, easy to upgrade and impossible to break

I honestly had no idea when I bought my alienware it would be this durable.

I've given this laptop hell and it keeps on ticking.

Also I cant get a thinkpad with a 17 inch screen.

Trust me when your on the road and your only lifeline to the outside world is your screen you want the biggest screen you can afford.

This. I had an Alienware years and years ago when I had a very tiny room with no space for a real desktop. Shit sucked. Nothing but problems. I did my research but I ignored all the warnings.

Then again, this was 2006. I don't know what's changed since they were acquired by Dell. I just tell people to stay away from gaming laptops if possible. Go mini-itx if space is really an issue.
>>
>>344550109
how does the Alienware handle water?.
does it have a trackpoint?
>>
Buy refurbished
>>
>>344546808
I had a Dell precision something in college that ran pretty damn good. Nothing spectacular but I could run high end games well enough on medium settings.

In general, I think laptops get a bad wrap. They're extremely useful for someone who likes to move around, and they're generally more versatile than a gayman PC.
>>
>>344546808
Best buy's got a ROG with 970 in it for about 1k, a little less if you get the floor model. Its treated me fine, and will be about as good as a sensible price will get you untill we get into the 10k era of laptops
>>
>>344550380
Sorry to hear you got a bad laptop from them, mine has been amazing and I recommend their laptops only to people who travel alot like I do.

>>344550419
Yes it has a trackpad, and I spilled some water on it a few years ago, I shut it down and let it dry out overnight and it was fine the next day. And no I dont recommend you to do that.

If it would suit your needs, you can use an external dock for a GPU like pic related with a laptop with a thunderbolt 3 port.

no, i meant a trackpoint, it's much better than a trackpad and extremely convenient when traveling
>>
fuck all this noise about gaming laptops

I'm heading to college next month and I need a laptop that has a keyboard that is close enough to what I'm used to (corsair k70). On a regular basis, I'm only gonna need it for classes, occasional photoshop, video rendering, Web browsing and MAYBE some light gaming such as ps2 emulation but that's the least important shit. what are my options that isn't a ThinkPad.
>>
Wait until the next generation of mobile GPUs. The 9XXm is like 2 years old at this point.
>>
>>344549405
wow man, nice pic, your job must be fun.

Yeah I've heard lots of good stories about Alien's durability.

>>344550109
Im saving those pics.

>>344550423
Im thinking about it too.

>>344550535
>They're extremely useful for someone who likes to move around, and they're generally more versatile than a gayman PC.

Amen on that, Im well aware of benefits of each, but the meme ''JUST BUY A PC'' is overmemed.

No one obviously enjoys being able to game in transit, while visiting granparents, going to lan parties, chilling on the couch in semi liquid state, or just plain taking it to the kitchen to keep an eye on the dinner.

10 fps up or down doesnt bother me once over 45.
>>
I'm using a MSI GE70 Apache Pro, unless you actually need a laptop for traveling to school and shit, don't get one, as this piece of shit (bought around a year ago) can't run any AAA game from 2014 onward without slowdowns out the ass. Witcher 3 at minimum at some 720p or other bullshit res slows down into the 20fps, at least it runs dolphin flawlessly though and Skyrim with texture dlc runs great.

>>344551137
Anything from best buy

>>344551178
This, the 960M is fucking terrible
>>
>>344550896
Seems over engineered for my needs, good to know though.

I just need basic portability.
>>
>>344551338
more like, everything from best buy is ass since they mostly push the fuck out of apple products
>>
>>344551451
Don't get an apple product then?
>>
>>344551338
Every game from next-gen onwards has been unoptimized as fuck though. Just look at The Bitcher and Fallout 4. Run absolutely AWFUL.

Fuck it I aint risking shit today.
>>
>>344551629
Yeah I will admit I'm not giving it all the credit it deserves, but after I hear anons saying a GTX 750ti runs everything they play at 1080 at near max, I was expecting a little bit more out of it

XPS 13/15
>>
>>344546808
I got an ASUS ROG laptop for $1149 for college, sold my gaming rig for it.

It runs very well and it's made with metallic material so it feels pretty durable.

There is no game I currently own it won't run (Arma 3, MGSV, Rainbow six siege, GTA V)
>>
>>344552630
Yeah I've had my eyes on ROG for a while, love the vents/ cooling on it.

Hows the screen and trackpad?

OP, read my post before making any decision.

RULE #1: /v/ always shitposts about laptops, disregard them

RULE #2: if you don't need a portable computer for videogames, DON'T BUY IT. go for a desktop + cheap laptop combo and upgrade later

RULE #3: buy the newer laptops with the GTX9(xx)M gpus. nvidia has the best laptop gpus because they're cooler, constantly updated with current drivers and delivers the best performance per watt. AMD laptop drivers suck dicks

okay now with that out of the way, i use a lenovo y50-70. thin, alminum, keyboard lights and most of all, doesn't look like a spaceship

INSTALL A SSD FOR YOUR GAMING LAPTOP. IT RUNS COOLER, FASTER AND IS LIGHTER. FUCK YOUR 1TB, JUST RELY ON USB 3.0 HDD FOR LARGE GAMES!
>>
>>344552950
What the fuck is that
>>
>>344553231
Duly noted, thanks for helping out.
>>
>>344550380
Dell builds absolute shit now. Cost cutting everywhere, and the customer support is the worst I've ever dealt with.

XPS is supposed to be good, but I wouldn't trust them at all with their latest jewing efforts.
>>
buy a Schenker.

Durable as much as the alienware and cost a lot less for the same hardware.

If you want the best of the best always go for cool laptops. Newest CPU and newest GPU. FUck Ram buy the smallest version and upgrade it yourself it will safe you a minimum of 100 bucks or more
>>
>>344554689

thanks for the tip with ram, will do.
>>
>>344554689
bdw is ram for laptops interchangeable with pc ram?
>>
>>344555260
no
>>
Dell xps 15 owner here. I bought around 2 months ago and i must say that it has a pretty good balance between portability, build quality and performance, also it looks quite beautiful and the 4k screen is amazing.

The cons are that it's game performance is mediocre at best but i didn't buy it as a gaming laptop so it's ok for my needs, you can play most new game at 1080p with low settings but that's it. Also it is quite portable, the touchscreen is quite useful but the battery life is not too great and the dell bloatware does not help. I heard that battery life is improved after a clean win install.
>>
>>344555260
oh and also dont buy any big ssd.

Basicly if youw ant a expensive laptop

You buy it for the case, screen, cooling and the GPU and CPU. You can almost always upgrade your own HDD to a SSD - save some money + the Ram (sell the old ram on craigslist).

Also dont bother with waranty, just buy a private insurance for your laptop. You will be off far better.

>>344556780
thanks bro, appreciate it.
