His initial plan was landing on some safe island with no zombies. That is a start but hardly the solution. You need supplies and an island without zombies usually has no supplies either. So you would need to get them from the outside which puts you at risk again.
At the end there is no solution but trying to stay alive with your own strength. Because even if you find a safe haven with food and no zombies. In their universe everyone turns into one once they die even without bite. So only one guy needs to fuck up to ruin an entire safe colony - Which is easy.

Iodine tablets have the same issue as a purifier - if you don't already have them, you need to find them, and even if you do you probably don't have an infinite or near infinite supply. Rainwater collection is definitely a good idea and something you should do even if you have a purifier or iodine tablets, but it's not consistent. I'm glad we're finally discussing alternatives, though. Obviously zombies are completely fictional and the odds of any apocalypse scenario are microscopic, but it's still good to have a plan just in case.

The vast majority of beginners are utterly incompetent when they first step into a yacht. By the time you've worked out not to aim into the wind you'll likely already have cracked your skull on the boom or grounded onto the shore.
You can learn the bare basics of working the mainsheet and tiller in a few hours of coaching, but by then you'll probably have already fucked things up beyond repair. Even if you are one of the ones that instinctively grasp the basics you still won't be able to handle the boat in heavy or light conditions, which may occur simultaneously with the undead uprising.
Also, depending the class of boat and your local harbor you also face a whole host of issues that will absolutely fuck any novice. Knowing what a rudder is won't stop you from grounding on a sandbar or being caught in the tide.
On top of all that, even if you are an experienced sailor you can still be fucked by pirates. Power boats are almost always faster and more reliable than yachts, so you won't be able to escape while there's still a lot of fuel to be found.
If you're truly serious about escaping to the water then I recommend stealing a power boat first, and then beg your way into being crew on a large yacht once your fuel reserves get low. Then, spend a few weeks learning everything you can from the skipper before killing him in a mutiny and claiming the vessel for yourself just before the food begins running out.
Just jumping straight into a yacht without experience is foolish and will probably end poorly.

That's maybe 20 lbs of armor -- armor designed far better in the mobility department than medieval armor technology mind you -- and 80+ pounds of gear. That armor weight could be cut down further because soldiers are dealing with bullets, not zombie teeth, which require only a minimum of protection.

The thing is, if you're swarmed by zombies then you're fucked with or without a suit of armor. It only takes 2-4 zombies to hold you down, depending on your strength. Even if you're /fit/ as fuck you can't do anything with the body weight of half a dozen people on you.

Plate mail is designed to protect people from blows, slashes and stabs, which are all things zombies do not do.
Zombies bite, and bites can't get through sufficient padding. Wearing plate, or even chain mail, is just excessive weight that will unnecessarily burn extra carbs.
Metal armor would be very useful if melee fighting with fellow armed humans, but depending on where you live most people will arm themselves with guns which penetrate classical armor.
The best armor in a zombie apocalypse would be several layers of thick wool and leather covering your entire body, with a motorbike helmet on your head for great protection and visibility. If you really wanted something solid between you and the zombies then a soft plastic would be effective yet lighter than steal.
This sort of motorcycle might look stupid and cliche, but if it's worn over sever thick layers of wool then nothing is biting through it. It's even tight and non-elastic, so zombies won't be able to grip or tug at it.
