No it's true, it doesn't even track your location if the app isn't actually open. You can being doing something else and then when you go back to the app it has to grab your location again and move you there. See, if the watch made it so you could catch pokemon even when the app isn't open that would be cool, but you can't so all it does is make it so you don't have to have the phone in your hand all the time, but it does still need to be on and open to the app. "Power saver mode" just blackens the screen when you turn the phone upside down.
I actually want one of these because I have no fucking clue how Pokemon Go works when I'm just staring at the screen.

Well of course the app has to be open. The point I'm trying to make is that you can lock your phone and everything is still registered.
For example, on my way to work the other day, I opened the app, but locked my phone. The screen was off, but the app was still running. I then placed my phone in my pocket, and only took it out when it vibrated to alert me of a nearby pokemon. Upon catching it, I locked it, and placed it back in my pocket. Worked the entire time.
Test it yourself. Put the sound on full, open the app, and lock it. Bet the music still plays.

Nope, locking the screen is the same as backgrounding the app. I lock the screen and the music stops. I move, I unlock the screen, my character then moves to my new location after I unlock the screen. I even tested this the first day I had it locking and unlocking the screen, my character would only updated when I unlock and pokemon only appear when the screen is on.
Might be a phone difference, I'm an Applefag. I know there are ways to force an app to stay running in the background and not just asleep but that'd probably kill the battery even more.
