These are all player avatar characters, characters that the players customizes themselves and by very definition are not iconic. And Fire Emblem isn't even a popular series. WFT on the other hand I had no idea what they looked like before they were a part of Smash or account that I'm not fat, but you probably knew who she was. Smash Bros games have always had oddball characters. Heck even other fighting games (crossover ones even) had characters you wouldn't expect to see fighting

Things are tilted in FE's favor because A: Smash in general seems to favor recent releases and protagonists, and FE happens to get very regular releases with a new protagonist nearly every time, and B: It's pretty big in Japan and Sakurai is a fan of the series.

Not every character is put in for the same reason another is. Are the people who bought Rob back then necessarily going to buy Smash because he got put in? Rob isn't a game. He's a toy.

I'm not even going to go down that dark "what even is a video game" road you're trying to lead me down. Ultimately none of that matters. Smash is primarily about Nintendo characters and they chose a Nintendo character from a piece of software that broke records and influenced the whole industry.
It's basically the same for the Miis, even if I do think they're execution was very poorly thought out.

ROB arguably doesn't belong either, and since Roy's games haven't made it out of Japan his only fanbase is already Smash fans so there was no reason for Sakurai to include him in the base game. For that same reason however, Sakurai knew it'd be easy to bait Smashfags out of their money for a Roy DLC since they already were familiar with him

Did people actually want Roy back in Japan? I feel like, in all categories, Wolf should've been the veteran of choice if Snake couldn't get in due to Konami complications, especially since Star Fox Zero was nearing it's release date at the time of the Ryu/Roy update. No matter how I look at it, it seems as if Roy got back just because Sakurai personally favored him.
Corrin still feels like a slap to the face, Sakurai claimed the DLC would be fanservice, but it feels as if the only fans getting serviced are FE fans, while everyone else gets nothing.

I know, but it's frustrating playing the waiting game.I don't think you understand, since the game was announced, I was waiting for them. During the daily site updates, I stayed up till 2 AM waiting for them to get confirmed. Even when Sakurai deconfirmed them, I figured, hey, maybe they'll get them working by adding them post development! After enduring the 8(?) month ballot period, I figured they would finally get their spot back but instead we got the 6th Fire Emblem character. I just wanted my favorite characters back, this ~3 year ride fucking sucks.
At this point I just hope we get an NX port that slaps them in so I don't have to go through a Japan Time 3.

If I recall it was less about consumers buying ROB and more about ROB convincing store owners to stock Nintendo shit because they could sell it more as a toy than as a video games machine.
Either way, it's silly to try put together a personal idea of what does and doesn't belong in Smash because 9 times out of 10 it's going to get proven wrong. The only thing Sakurai has been adamant about is only video game characters are allowed, everything else seems like fair game as long as it's popular or interesting to some degree
