SFV has the opposite problem to SF4. SF4 was incredibly convoluted and bogged down with endless amounts of 'tech' and pointless nuances that bogged the game down while adding very little, while SFV has dumbed itself down so much that it has neutered the 'fundamental' style of play it was trying to promote.

In arcades on initial release it was 7.8 frames. They got it down to 7.2 frames by the time they unlocked Akuma.
It didn't hit 5 frames until SSF4 with the home console release being 5.9 frames on 360 and jumping between 5.9 and 6.9 on PS3.
Throughout its first year of competitive play SF4 was sitting at 7frames.

This is my first serious fighting game so i wouldn't say i'm doing horribly, but i am bad.
I'm unable to reach Ultra Bronze. Soon as I step into the thousands I suddenly get super bodied by everyone until I'm back down to 900. Repeat for eternity.

step 1: learn the basics of most characters like what buttons look like what etc.
step 2: play against real human beans
step 3: when you lose, go to training mode and tell the dummy to record a string of something that fucked you up. that way the dummy training bot will spam that shit out and you can figure out how to get around it
step 4: you can watch replays if you want but if you're a complete newbie you really just need experience more than anything

Even if he's lost options compared to SF4 Ryu that's completely irrelevant, because everyone else has too and this isn't SF4. Ryu is easily top 5 in SFV.
