Why don't we ever see that many 2D platformers outside of indie devs and handheld releases anymore?

Except Nintendo, do big companies see 2D platformers as a lesser genre or something?

Its very hard to do them right
Ex: mighty n 9
So devs stah away from them since they want easy to make and milk games
>>
EA - Unravel
Ubi - Rayman
SEGA - Sonic
and others

Because modern developers spend a long time thinking about realism

And there is no setting on this Earth which is composed primarily of strings of floating platforms.

Platformers inherently require a sort of game-centric interpretation of setting
>>
There's some here and there but overall 2D platformers don't sell very much compared to other genres, and big publishers are all about maximizing their investment.

Yes it's why publishers won't back a game unless a dev already has some money in to it ala MN9 and Bloodstained
>>

they can't justify putting out a 2D sidescroller for 60 bucks.
and kids aren't interested in that shit.
Big developers are expected to make the big 60$ blockbusters.
leave the 2D / 2.5D games to the smaller devs.

They only sell that little because publishers and marketers arbitrarily decide which games do and don't sell.

The market is not accustomed to 2d platformers beyond ~20-30$ aside from very few (console) exceptions.
Also 2D Platformer actually require good leveldesign, which is a lost art nowadays and something the west never got around to actually learn save for some exceptions.

Since when does being a 2D platformer automatically mean it's less than your average 60 dollar game? On what grounds?
>>

It's a question what people will buy.
Except for Mario, no one will buy a 2D platformer for 60$ since it's not what people are accustomed to.
It kind of sucks, but the percieved value of a 2D platformer nowadays is inherently lower than for many other genres

and that's just 2D. 3D is harder for there to be good level design - This is why AAA games are linear rollercoasters or open world games.
