Also, you don't seem to understand how marketing works. OF COURSE people signed up to Steam for free games. But then, they hear about Steam Sales and a good game for $1 or $2, and say "that's not much, and I already have a Steam account..."
There are probably a large number of people in that 35% increase who did go out and buy something anyways, since they already had the account.
