Looting stuff was pretty fluid. You hit the button on a dead body, a safe, whatever, and the little box pops up, takes a fraction of a second to take all the shit and keep going.

An improvement over a big clunky menu popping up just to see what is inside a chest in Skyrim, FO3, New Vegas, etc.

Improved combat, graphics and arguably did power armour better than the last few fallout games did.

Overall it was a decent game, but not really an RPG, much more of an open world FPS.

It feels like Bethesda's big issue is they want to make action games, but can't let go of the few little bits of RPG left over.

This, but it could be better. They need to give you a GECK and... actually, that should've been the whole game. Nobody gives a fuck about "saving the world" by doing a bunch of boring fetch quests and shooting radroaches for the umpteenth time, the only place to take the series is to put you in a position where you can be the leader of a faction. Build up your territory, make alliances etc. It's mostly radiant quests and open-world shit anyway so it would adapt to whatever you build.

You know what, OP, I fucked up, I take it back. I said they did nothing right because I didn't think there was anything that didn't need to be qualified, but there was one thing they did right, through and through.

You know how, when you accidentally hit "take all" when you're interacting with a way full container, now it says, "are you sure you want to take all"?

That's the only good thing about Fallout 4.

Settlement builder was fun for a while, but eventually got boring as fuck.

The settlement and settler system is a professional-done repackaging of a lot of things that players were doing with skyrim mods.

Setting homes for followers. Giving them patrols and tasks, and jobs, building things by placing statics.

This is what a lot of players wanted in a beth game and beth game gave it to us.

Gunplay and melee are better. Power armor is better. Weapon and armor customization are better. Settlements are almost another game by themselves.

POWER armor now makes you feel POWERful.

Weapon Customization and modification is better but it did sacrifice variety in the process.

The only time voiced characters really work in RPG's is when you play a set person, like the witcher, or possible DA 2, with changes in your characters personality actually changing how the lines were voiced, and what your dialogue is in combat. When it's just the same voice actor no matter who you are or what you're roleplaying, it's fucking shit.

This. It's why the technique worked in Mass Effect, when Shepard was a finite (for one thing definitely military) character construct. A Fallout character is not like this, a Fallout character is, by nature, a blank slate. They could maaaaaaaaybe have pulled it of, but that would have required a Fallout script with decision trees, not... "hey Mass Effect sold pretty well, let's do what they did in spite of how completely wrong it is for the game we're making".

I agree with you, though I never played DA2 past the demo because it's a horrible game. Shepard also comes to mind right up there with Geralt.

It wasn't just the voice actor, but also the quality of the written lines that were irksome.

Mass effect is a really great example of it too, but those are the only ones that really come to mind. Inquisition did it okay as well I think, but only in that I never really felt like it was jarring, but it wasn't great either, worse than in 2.

It does feel like they just copied Mass effect's system though, without any thought of why that worked in mass effect.

Bethesda having fucking terrible dialogue was pretty much offset by you never really having to say that much, you pretty much just pick and option in the TES games, and that works okay.

But in 3, the player choice was terrible for dialogue, and I think voicing it, plus making every option essentially the same shit was a really bad decision.

This reminds me, how have they not managed to get VATS right after so much time? It's fucking annoying having the camera stick on an enemy that's already dead while you're getting mauled by the rest. Let alone in New Vegas or 3 where it would just show your character grimacing towards the enemy for 15 seconds instead of them shooting half the fucking time.

You have 12 other guns in your anus anyway. What difference does it make if the one you are currently using is stuck to your back? Either way it is no immersive.

The only good thing about weapons sticking to backs is seeing what idle enemies are armed with.

I think that when you have people sticking sniper rifles to their back like post-it notes and can Looney Toon between 24 different guns, it's already fucked to Hell and I wouldn't fuss over it.

Except I always play first-person only, other than stopping to look at outfits and pose for screenshots.

Well it does look home made. The barrel could be smooth bore even, but the range is so close.

What stand out more to me is the Trijicon night sights on a pistol that looks like it was made by a man named Jeeter out of an old pipe, cardboard and wood from a shipping pallet.

I actually like the settlement system a lot. But it's quite limited if un-modded.


Hate the dialogue, writing, quests, many of the characters, tons of essential npcs, immortal followers, etc


Game has a fucking lot of negatives, but I enjoy the game for it's positives.

They've said multiple times that they want the player to be the center of the world and the game is just a sandbox for them to do anything they want. I would argue that takes away what people actually want from games, making decisions feel important. An open area where I can kill the same enemies and every dialogue ends the same is just not my idea of fun.
