The people who fought the battles told their party members about it and taught them the skills they learned during the fights.

If it's not a permadeath, then the characters don't die, they just get either KO'd or injured/disabled. And since they're canonically surviving, they're learning the most valuable experience of all: how not to get their shit ruined.
>>
The people not in your immediate party still have to travel from town to town to keep up with your party. Surely they got into battles along the way, too, and they got stronger while you were apart.

Many tabletop RPGs have no experience points.

Now that's annoying. If it wasn't for the speed thing I'd change the position of each team member so that they could be leveled up evenly.

It's implied that those characters are travelling with you, even though you aren't controlling them in the party, they are still involved in the encounters.

Or

It's implied that they are training while not travelling with you, in order to keep their skills sharp.

This happened to me in Drakan: The Ancient Gates. I paused the game while falling down a cliff so I could go do something and the game lets you save anywhere so when I came back to it I discovered that my brother had saved my game so that he could turn it off and play something else. Never finished the game because of that.

I don't know about stealing experience, but in Guild Wars, enemies did gain experience for killing you and with that in mind, players eventually came up with the concept of "death leveling". By luring a monster to a resurrection shrine and having it kill them repeatedly, they'd level the monster up to the point where killing it would actually give them experience. That allowed players to achieve max level in a tutorial area where otherwise it would be impossible to gain the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title. It took you months of real time to pull that off if not years. Later devs added alternative ways of earning experience there and the title became much less valuable.

Usually, only the protagonist can't be removed from the party, so by the end, the protagonist tends to be at least ten levels higher than everyone else.
