The Wii, PS3, and Sonic 06 came out that year for one. Plus, Buzzfeed was founded that year, and Facebook was opened to the general public.

It's probably when developers first started to realize that making easier, casual games marketed to a much wider audience than ever before was highly profitable, but there was a delayed reaction to this up until about CoD4 came out and proved this was also true for genres that were typically made for "core" gamers.

The decline started in gen 5. Gen 6 still had arcade ports and original exclusives coming out, but the shooter/FIFA faggotry was in full swing, with the death of the Dreamcast heralding the end of that sort of development. By gen 7 it was terminal, and the last smattering of arcade/original games came out for the Wii. Since then there hasn't been anything on consoles OR PC really worth getting since both western and eastern development have stagnated into repetitive safe shit for the biggest market of all, people who don't really like games but play them for some reason anyway.
