2 gaming sessions. When I get a new game, I usually binge it for a couple days, playing 2 to 3 hours at a shot. If I haven't had any fun by the end of the second day or the total experience doesn't meet my arbitrary threshold for "fun", I usually lose interest in the game.
>>
>>344375369
hey man I was just born today and tomorrow at the same time so we can die together with a sheep or ram or what ever you want have a donut and laser printer now and then good luck with kate and the kids I love you
>>
It's a shame it's gotten to this point but I give a game 15 minutes to give me control. If you have unskippable cutscenes in the beginning? That's just eating into the time. I don't care about your story or any video game story.
Once I'm playing I'll give it an hour. If it starts preventing me from playing to pop up with text on how to play the fucking game, I'll drop it.
>>
>>344376497
Out of interest, what movies have you played that didn't give you control one time in the first 15 minutes?

Game was trash
>>
>>344376598
Well, you do get control in a couple games but it's meaningless because you either just walk or just talk without getting to experience the actual game play.
Paper Mario starts slow, so does Persona on PS2. Grandia takes 11 and a half minutes before you can do anything, and Grandia III I had to drop before I got to a single battle.
Much prefer the games with minor amounts of dialogue and story before you get to fuck around. Link's Awakening, Dragon Warrior Monsters, Borderlands (fuck that long intro though). Or just pick up and play, Super Mario Bros., Diablo II, my favorite is Arkanoid
>>
Depending on the game I play it for 2 to 5 hours.
Then I either leave it to rot forever or play it whenever I feel like it till I finish.
Though I rarely drop a game because I always research about it before downloading/buying.
>>
>>344375369

This cannot be real.
>>
Depends.

Its not uncommon for me to get half way through and stop playing, or even in some cases get really close to the end and stop. Usually it is because of other shit going on in my life or other games that have a higher priority.

Usually if there is a game that I do not want spoiled, I marathon that shit in a few days/week. I also rarely replay games unless I absolutely love it, there are multiple paths (light/dark that make a difference, etc) or enough time as passed, so it is common for me to start something up and drop it early.
>>
5 minutes
>>
>>344375369
Seconds. Milliseconds. A single glimpse of a cover is enough for me to say "no".

There are tens of thousands of videogames across all platforms. I don't fucking owe my time to any of them, let alone all of them.
>>
>>344375369
I made it nearly 2 hours into Thief: Deadly Shadows before finally deciding it was awful unfaithful garbage.
>>
That depends on the kind of game, some games can start slowly like Monster Hunter or have their first level(s) turn players off like with Deus Ex's Liberty Island.

Most of the time I'll probably just ask someone where the game in question picks up, and see where I go from there.

I honestly like Infinite. It's nowhere near as good as the first two, but it's still enjoyable.
>>
>>344379280
This. Granted, I enjoyed Infinite better then Bioshock 2 on a story and level design standpoint (Bioshock 2 has the best gameplay though), but the gameplay limitations held it back from reaching anywhere near what Bioshock 1 did.
>>
SS1 > SS2 > Bioshock = BioShock 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Death > BioShock Infinite

>saying "nigger" is the only way to be racist
that's so racist
>>
>>344379568
You're right. Saying "nigger" isn't the only way to convey a world of racism, but it's still idiotic to not include it.

It's like setting a game during the 1950's and nobody smokes.
>>
>>344379032

It was indicative of a larger problem: The developers had no balls.

They wanted to tell this complex story about important themes but they were totally unwilling to commit to them. They wanted to show racism, but they didn't have the balls to actually show anything horrific and so we're supposed to believe that throwing a baseball at an interracial couple was some horrible thing at a time when black people were still getting lynched regularly in the south. They wanted to tell a story about the Vox Populi but you get a handful of scenes and then jump to another timeline. They wanted to tell a cool interdimensional science fiction story but they didn't bother explaining anything and it became a nonsensical clusterfuck. They wanted to make a fun dynamic shooter but they didn't bother doing anything with the gameplay to differentiate it from every other contemporary shooter. They wanted to do a twist ending but they just did a bunch of random bullshit that didn't actually recontextualize anything that happened before hand so it was just random bullshit.

It's a fucking piece of shit. It's not "overrated," I'm not being to harsh. The game was fucking bad.
>>
>>344375369

If the tutorial and the first mission/level is crap and doesnt hook me right away I drop the game.
>>
>museum level
>violent native Americans
>fire bombing Peking due to boxer rebellion

i mean...they weren't wrong
>>
>>344375369
I like to give games the benefit of the doubt that somehow maybe under all of the press and hype they get that it'll be a decent game but most of the time I'm widely disappointed. If a game doesn't captivate me with either a decent story or decent gameplay within the first 3-4 hours of playing then it's dropped.
I still try to finish games that are objectively terrible just so I can get a grasp as to why it's terrible. Some shit you see is just impossible to play and finish because everything is bad.

20 minutes. If a game can't catch my interest in some way by that point, I can only assume it will continue to waste my time. That said it isn't that hard to catch my interest and I find myself playing some really shitty games for a few hours, only to drop them there instead after getting a real taste of them. So I'd say like 20 minutes, with another cutoff at maybe 2-3 hours.

>how racist people "were"

When I decide, OP. No arbitrary limits dictate my enjoyment.
>>
>>344380083
The problem is a lot of people are offended by the mere depiction period correct racial relations, as if even admitting it happened is horrible and wrong. Trying to tell a story about it in a video game of all fucking things, was only going to cost them sales. I can see why they had no balls, but have to wonder why they even tried to tell that kind of story.

I either drop it after a week or play it for 50+ hours Really no inbetween, overwatch was the first game to last over a month since GTA online came to PS4.
>>
I just dropped technomancer after like an hour, maybe 90 minutes
if I can latch onto some aspect of a game that I like, that can carry me pretty fucking far but that game just has nothing going for it in the gameplay department
>>
Just dropped Jak X: Combat Racing. Spent about 3-4 hours in it.

>>Game is one giant escort mission
>>The person you are escorting is invincible creating absolutely no challenge.
Then it's not really an escort mission, is it? It's basically a single player with an NPC ally.
>>
Depends. I played Dark Souls 2 for about 40 hours before dropping it for good.
Apart from that I generally make well informed, educated choices, so the probability of dropping a game goes towards nil.
>>
>>344375369
I float between games so frequently that I could say I drop it after a day or so. I honestly think there's something wrong with me.

DotA 2 really killed my urge to devote time to a game. You have to trust in the abilities of your teammates, and teammates seem to always have brain damage.
>>
5 hours unless I completely hate it.
>>
>>344376497
You probably couldn't play the original half life then
>>
>>344383912
It's shit anyways. There, I said it. Few games have aged so badly and the "interactive" intro pissed off already the very first time.
>>
Gameplay based games:
~1-2 hours

Story based games:
~10-20 hours

In RPG I drop it when I get to big city, get ton of sidequests, get overwhelmed, quit it for some time, come back later, don't remember single thing, start from beginning, get to big city, get ton of sidequests, get overwhelmed, quit it for some time,....

it's a vicious cycle. but sometimes I manage to break it
>>

>Elizabeth feels like a real person
Except she doesn't she's a girl locked up in a dungeon for her whole life, yet she's easygoing and great at socialising. She also a plot device and jumps through some bizarre logic hoops to move the story of the game forward.
And Ken knew it, in his dev notes he said several times they compromised Beth character to make players like her.

How funny all these sites go for Art with the big A and hate on pandering, yet fall flat when games pander to them.
>>
>>344384689
Isn't it usually the other way round? I.e. when you come to the big city you are not overwhelmed anymore by stuff? Worst thing about RPGs for me is always navigating through menus and skills.
>>
For as long as it's enjoyable. The Last of Us, Homefront and Fallout 4 I played for about 30 minutes, so I guess that's about the shortest.
>>
>>344384993
I don't know. I always get like 20 sidequest, don't know which one to do first, so I rather quit the game :D it's a quirk of mine
>>
FF7 was worth sticking with for materia setups and that's it.
>>
>>344376497

What the fuck do you even play you miserable fuck?

Pacman and tetris?

There's hundreds of amazing games that have slow starts.
>>
>>344375369
>feels like real person
>can't be treated like one because she's literally invisible to hostile NPCs
One part mad that we never got the E3 Infinite from 2011 and one part mad that Resident Evil 4 got this shit right in 2005.

>NPC ally
more like a glorified item dispenser with tits, but yes
>>
>>344375369
I played the Last Remnant for probably ~10 hours before I decided that the game can go fuck itself.

Neatly segregated zones and dungeons which are a good way to not get carried away with playing are not worth the combat system entirely based on RNG.

Similarly, I played Dragon Age Inquisition for 40 hours before I felt like playing it further would be pointless and just quit.

Damn straight.
>>
>>344379280

I did too. I felt the combat was much more fluid and that my weapons actually did something, I wasn't walking around like I was ladened with 200 pounds of lead strapped to me.

The art style was on point, the world was interesting, Elizabeth was CUTE, and the twins were intriguing.

It had just the right amount of pop-sci physics to be interesting without coming off as tryhard or pretentious and it worked well with the story.

Fuck everyone else, call me a normie, but I enjoyed it.
>>
>>344388016
Hey man, some people like eating shit.
>>
>>344375369
There still isn't a better game out there than Infinite.

On topic: it varies. If a game is bad, like say, Medal of Honor: Warfigter or Kingsom's of Amalur: Reckoning, I quit around the first hour. If a game is atrocious like Phantasy Star Online 2 or Diablo 2, I quit within five minutes. If a game is a bewildering disaster on every level like Shenmue or Borderlands 2, I usually desperately try to give the game a chance for like, three hours before I auit in disbelief.

Then there are the times when I play a great game up to the halfway point and never continue. Which is always my fault. Or sometimes I don't want a game to end - funnily enough I felt that way about Bioshock Infinite, so it took me two months to finish it. Worth every moment.
>>
>>344379280
I think Bioshock 1 was a disappointment and Bioshock 2 was terrible.

Infinite in my view is still the prime example of fixing a video game by throwing out everything that is unnecessary, and streamlining everything else. Like Destiny, its game design is manifest elegance.
>>
>>344388208
And people like you are reprehensable human beings barely even worthy of the moniker "people".
>>
If it bores me in the first 30 minutes I just end it there, should've done a good job making itsef interesting (I give RPGs an hour or two because of their slower nature)

Some people say I should give it time but I played shit like bayonetta. That game throws you right into the action just to have you hooked. I don't care if later it's walking on the train station and doing a lame puzzle, that first time set the tone and indeed it got crazier and more fun to play.
>>
>>344388448
I'm sorry, I mistyped.

I meant REGULAR Phantasy Star 2. I wouldn't touch Phantasy Star Online 2 with a ten foot pole.
>>
>>344388448
Here's your fucking (you).
>>
Why did pretty much every reviewer praise Bioshock: Infinite to high heaven when it's total trash?
>>
I can skip through several portions a few videos at random points in the game (using a lets play) and can easily tellcif'll enjoy it within 10 minutes

In many cases i can tell just from the first few seconds.

Once youve played hundreds of games for some 20 years its very easy to make such judgements
