I'd like to recommend the Gyrozetter game as a decent Japanese game. It's basically Pokemon with cars and is part of the story of the anime of the same name. It's completely playable without any Japanese knowledge at all(Though you need to Google Translate if you plan on 100% the game due to some rare cars being annoying to get) although it'll take a bit before you understand status effects, the bosses get to be quite tough once you get about 15 hours into the game, and it's been pretty fun for the 30ish hours I've put into it.
The designs aren't as great as Transformers for example, but they're still pretty good outside of some of the evil ones, and the animations on Final Bursts are amazing, especially thanks to the music accompanying them.
