The way I tend to describe these kind of games to newbies is, in short, they're pretty much hundrerds of hours of boss rush in a single package. They do tend to have genre-specific issues, like reskinning certain monsters just to change their attributes and the like, but they're great fun and by definition have co-op, so if you have friends to play along with you it makes them even more fun.
That said, I think the best starting place for any newcomer is Monster Hunter, so you might want to try 4U or the upcoming Generations first.

I think my hate towards Celceta might be an overreaction since I played the game on Nightmare and to win you pretty much have to abuse the game's broken and really not rewarding at all mechanics, and the boss fights' flaws become even more apparent. It kind of made me wonder if the same people responsible for Felghana or Origins were also responsible for this shitshow, and what exactly went wrong. Aside from that, the world map ended up being kind of repetitive, even though I loved the idea at first. Walking through the forest in Nightmare meant nothing but avoiding combat and stepdashing like a retard to the next point where I had to go, at least when backtracking, and the game has tons of that shit. Placement of fast travel points wasn't as intuitive as it could've been.
But if you don't go balls deep autism, I guess it can be a fun game. Just not really Ys.

I just finished the game a while back and having played all the 3 games of the 4th Ys game, this is definitely one of the weakest games in the series I've ever played.
Even the story they rewrote and supposedly "cleared" up had horrible writing and loose ends all over the place. The whole map exploration thing was nice but as you said, they got lazy with the world design in general.

I didn't particularly like P4G, but I did enjoy P4 when I was a tad younger so you might have some fun with it. As some Anon said, the game doesn't really become a game after 5 hours and 2 dungeons into it, so try to decide whether you enjoy it or not after that time period.
I'd personally recommend Trillion, Dungeon Travelers 2, Atelier Rorona Plus, and maybe Digimon, Tales of Hearts R and Disgaea 3 or 4 if they seem fun to you.

If you're looking at it from the perspective of an outsider who has never played a game in the series, then it seems like a pretty okay RPG game.
But as a Ys game, it was just a letdown. Like for me, around the time I was around 40% done exploring the forest, I was already just about done with almost every aspect of the game and I grudgingly finished the rest for what was ultimately in my view a mediocre story that was supposed to be the definite 4th Ys game.
If you have time to burn, you can play the PC Chinese version of the game that was English translated and hacked. Here's the mega link for the game:

Not that person but I think that the party system was just a really divisive thing for the game's fanbase, and I'm on the side of not personally enjoying the party system games as much as the older games.
Ys VII was just way too big of a jump IMO and introduced just way too many mechanics and things that just seemed to be in the game just because.they got suggested in the brainstorming session. The sin with Celceta was not only not really trying to refine and figure out what did and didn't work with VII and refining it, but to actually continue doing things that were already deemed bad in VII.
Compared to Ys V which was the precursor to the combat system in VI, Oath and Origins, it didn't bring as many changes and each change they did make was a well thought out thing that was implemented to see how they could make ARPGs work out for that title and although the game wasn't that great, the basis for the way combat worked gave us VI, Oath and Origins because they went and saw what worked and didn't and went back to refine what was good of that combat system and throw out the bad and redesigned the flaws.

If you play Monster Hunter then God Eater will be insanely easy. The OST and story of God Eater are indisputably better than MH and really it's redeeming factors.
Gameplay is simple. Slash shit with floaty weapons and eat enemies for parts to upgrade. It's worth playing compared to other MH clones (It's more like a Soul Sacrifice rather than a Freedom Wars or Lord of Arcana) but it might not be your cup of tea. Look at gameplay videos.
Also the Aragami variety in God Eater is low. Prepare for recolours out of the ass

Think of them as boss rushes with or without mook enemies thrown around to slow you down that get progressively more grindy as you play.
They're really not for everyone. It's basically starting out with nothing and spending ages fighting anything, then you get higher in level or items or ranks and you get better items, but then the enemies get stronger, and it's a vicious cycle of good items being a huge pain to come by and extremely rare drops while enemies become huge damage sponges without said items and getting said items just makes them take about as long as enemies did at the start of the game.
I personally have tried and tried to get into Monhun but it's really just not for me, and Soul Sacrifice can be painful with some of the 6* and higher missions since stuff just takes forever to kill. Freedom Wars was the only one I could really get into, and that's just because even with all the time it takes you to make a good weapon it actually shows. You just end up massacring bosses after all the time you put into it.

Thanks for the sum-up. I only have about 20 hours in MH (split evenly between 3U and 4U), but I'm trying to break into them. Just wish they were on the Vita for the controls aspect. Played a bit of Soul Sacrifice Delta. Have Freedom Wars but haven't tried it.
