This game is insanely addicting. The best customization I've seen since armored core. It has one of the best user interfaces I've seen in gaming (which is surprising given its a Japanese title and their u.i.'s are usually garbage). Super fun and engaging gameplay and gorgeous graphics.
Tip for you: when you get certain parts, if they have like a missile attached to them or beam sabers, they're not aesthetic. They can then be equipped in your optional parts section. Nothing is wasted in this title.

Why skip on the objectively more polished series?
Licensed stuff isn't enough to carry a subpar game.
The game has some of the best customization and gameplay but that's all it has going for it. There are only a handful of stages that get recycled and every mission takes too fucking long to beat. One of my builds has weapons that are at arround 12k damage but stages still take like 30 minutes to beat because of all the waves of enemies. And then there's the online aspect where you fight other peoples builds in which the battles are too short because player created gundams don't have the bloated hp pools of offline mooks. I can finish a 2v1 battle in 30 seconds and it takes a minute to even start the match.

Honestly this game has more in common with beyblade than any gundam series. You and a few friends build gundams (beyblades) and enter tournaments. The MC and a few other people are innately better than other at using gundams (beyblades) because they can enter hypermode (depicted in beyblade by yelling).

Anything is viable.
When you master an EX attack or super move you can use them without the required parts/weapons. For example if you equip the shining gundam arms and master Shining finger you can use the technique without the arms. You can use axe techniques regardless of what weapon you have equiped once you've mastered them.
For body parts there are five colors which denote rarity. White is common, green is uncommon, blue is rare, purple is super rare, and gold is legendary. Rarity affects the ammount of skill slots the body part has. Common only has four skill slots whereas legendary has ten. You can increase rarity by combining with a part that is at least one level of rarity higher. For instance you can turn a white part into a green by combining it with green. Combining white with gold will also give you green because the upgrade process is one step at a time.
All body parts are pretty much have the same max potential except a few have integrated weapons that can be equiped as optional weapons. The strength of these weapons is affected by the level of the body part that gives access to it. You can raise levels by merging with plastics or with higher level gear you don't want. For example right now I'm using the gelgoog high mobility legs because they give access to the naginata which adds a lot of flair to my combos.

Shields are similar to body parts except the integrated weapons can be used at any time by using the shield button and the shoot button. I'd recommend using type 7 controls to map the shoot button to L1.
Unlike body parts and shields , guns/weapons are a lot more random so not every weapon has the same potential and most of your time will probably be spent grinding for one that suits you. Weapons of the same type or even the same model can have different movesets and bonus damage types. For instance a beam saber might say Consecutive Attack I, II, or III. These numbers tell you how fast the weapon swings and how long the combo's are at the price of damage per individual attack. Weapons with lvl 1 will swing fewer times but hit harder than lvl 3 weapons and lvl 2 weapons are the middle ground. Some weapons can possibly have attacks that are done by holding triangle but it's all random. The randomness becomes more evident when you get a lot of copies of weapons.
I mentioned bonus damage and that another weird thing that I've barely come across. Some weapons have innate fire/lightning/freeze/acid elements. Fire acts like poison, lightning stuns enemies more often, freeze freezes (duh) and acid lowers enemy defense.
There's a lot but these the the most essential things to know.

Nope. Thankfully you don't have to land a hit with a technique to master it. Just make sure you don't use more than one technique that you've mastered and you're golden. I recommend mastering double swords first because they unlock the best close range techniques which are a ring of flying energy swords that rotate around you and deal damage equal to 100% or 200% of your equipped weapon.
I really want to play it but I don't have a PS4 and I don't want to buy a PS4 when the only games I want on it is Gundam and two vanillaware games, one of which isn't even out.

There's no in game restriction for using mastered techniques, it's just that it's most efficient to equip a full loadout of unmastered techniques to level them all up at the same time. It also keeps the game from becoming too repetitive.
