In P3, the battle system brought out levels of planning and strategy that P4 simply isn't capable of. Single-target skills remained relevant until the very end while P4 made them useless once you get the multi-target equivalent, since you can't fuck up the 'knocked down' state by hitting the same enemy twice. Also, physical attacks being simplified into one category was dumb. At least Persona Q fixed this.
The AI Party can be managed through party commands, which works better than people give it credit for.

My gripe with the character development was how the bulk of it was thrown at you duirng the Shadow fights. The concept of Shadow-selves being the "true self" only works if you have a full understanding of the person in question. So when P4 trows it all at you with a character you only just met and don't even know it completely falls apart.

I feel the opposite. It should've had a darker tone of "Fuckin media" and "People like nice lies way better than ugly truth" Like it set up.
The beginning is great at setting this up. It had Yosuke lying to himself in this badass gruesome world, Yukiko spilling the beans about wanting to piggy back off of a boy for free on magic television that's being watched by everyone, it even set up the message that truth is better in the long run with Chie and Yukiko being better off after admitting everything.
Shit even the intro set this up within this fucking awesome intro sequence with izanagi and all the characters.
But then it just gets shit. The gameplay is piss easy and a joke, the dungeons are tartarus with big boring hallways, the characters are flat as fuck since their development is optional so the development is just a repeat of the realization that got the personas, the actually gameplay differences weren't there, fucking teddie sucked, all the social links accomplished fucking nothing overall minus Dojima and Nanako and even then theyre still optional, nanako comes back to life because literally no fucking reason, and then the game swerves back to the central theme like it totally didn't throw it in the trash for an entire game.
There's lots more reasons why P4 is a fucking disappointment.

Here's another thing that bugs me. Yukiko's whole INN problem.
Do we ever see her mother in the game? I can actually see how your parents forcing their own dreams on you can be a problem but Yukiko didn't really have any dreams to speak of and the only thing she had to give up was helping out once in a while instead of going to the food court with her friends a couple of times.
Compared to someone like Eikichi from IS who had a dream and whose abusive father legitimately terrified him it's hard to see Yukiko as anything more than a brat.
I don't mean to compare games I honestly don't but it's just that I really wish we saw more to these so called shadows that gave the problems more weight.
