In fact I wish they took a lesson from Wildstar and pruned a few more while really buffing the ones that are left AND THEN give you 8 slots for you to choose what abilities you want active. It would help differentiate people more than just the talent trees do. Every Class X Talent Tree Y person might not be identical then. There would be more room for experimentation.

I raided for years and my rotation was 4-5 skills with maybe 2 more for burst and 1 or 2 other highly situational skills. I don't see the problem with pruning. The things they got right were when you chose a talent and the talent-granted ability actually replaced your default one in all uses, like certain druid melee talents iirc (havent played in a long time).
Shit, dude, when we were raiding Molten Core there were a few classes who literally hit one button to dps. Mages and some Warlocks, for example. I played every class during BC and WOTLK and most of them kept to a 4-6 or so main skill rotation. So why the fuck have we ever needed 40 skills? That sort of bullshit is what made it a real pain in the ass to play a warrior past WOTLK.

Sure if you are comparing it to WoTLK, thats a fair point. But if you actively turn around and say Vanilla was the pinnacle of the game and nothing was better, you clearly didn't play vanilla. Most of the classes were drop-dead simple, several specs were considered worthless, hell some things like Prot warriors could get by with 1-2 moves.
Most of the shit back then was useless fluff when it came to raiding. The most complex thing was healers having different ranked heals for mana conservation.
I will admit, I am sad to see abilities pruned out since WoTLK, as I feel it was pretty complex but also varied back then. However it's no where near as bad as vanilla.

There is titanforging. Any item you get can have its level increased by a random amount. That amount rerolls every time, so you have say (made up numbers), 20% chance to get 5 more ilevels, then if that succeeds, 20% chance to get 5 more ilevels, all the way up to whatever the highest mythic raid gear is. The odds of it happening are infinitesimal, but starting dungeon blues can become the highest possible ilevel if you get super super lucky.

It's WoW, It's blizzard. Every xpac changes or adds enough to bring peopel back in droves. And despite WoD's problems it still brought enough hype to raise subs higher than what MoP had even if only for a couple months.
Legion is something they've been "carrot on a stick" to the fanbase for years. Not to mention a shiney awesome artifact weapon. So yeah it's probably going to explode at release as usual.
The new mythic+ dungeons and world quests will determine if people stick around and won't know till people their hands on it.
