System Shock 1 thread
>>
Who cares, SS1 is nearly unplayable.
>>
I doubt anybody played that here.
Pretty sick game, way better than SS2.
Fuck that remake, fucking hacks building their shitty careers on things they had nothing to do with.
>>
>>344214386
Playing it now for the first time. Currently on deck 5. It just gets better and better. The combat was shit at first, but with the flechette and the assault rifle I'm having an absolute blast. Also is it just me or is the shield complete useless? Also does re-spawning in conversion chambers have any cost at all?
>>
>>344214757
Nope. No cost
>>
>>344214267
terrible meme
>>
>>344214267
it plays just fine with the mouselook mod which comes default in system shock enhanced and system shock portable

maybe you just need to get good
>>
>>344214757
you can abuse the shit out of respawns so try to get a good feel for the map so you can backtrack faster. fucking numbers
>>
>>344214757
Shield has several upgrades, later on it blocks most of damage.
>>
>>344214267
>get mod that let's you control as a normal fps
>enjoy your shock title that is pretty much up to modern standards
>>
>>344214757
the only cost is time wasted, which only matters if you're playing on the highest mission difficulty, which gives the game a 7 hour time limit
>>
>>344214124
System Shock 2 is the superior game as it hasn't aged like goat piss and is actually playable by modern standards.
>>
>>344215434
The enemy AI is really, really not up to modern standards.

And I say that as a fan of the game
>>
>>344214757
>Also does re-spawning in conversion chambers have any cost at all?

No, but on some levels, you are revived with barely any health or energy so it's not something you should always rely on.
>>
>>344215208

The original was shit. Good game. Bad controls. The enhanced version was VASTLY better in terms of controls and the unity remake is currently looking good other than animations not being correct with the hit animations/swing.

>>
>>344215850

The demo for that bothered the fuck out of me. It shouldn't have, since on the surface it looks fine and detailed. But when you really start to pay attention, it looks artificial as hell. Like slapping a coat of paint over the old game and hoping that'd be enough. It seemed cheap.

I hope they improve it, because the enemies looked fantastic though.
>>
>>344214386
It looks decent visually and I don't mind the menu updates. Not sure about the ambient music, System Shock wasn't exactly horror so it seems a bit misguided trying to make the remake like that

System Shock 2 is massively influential on later games. It's hard to really compare these days since so many other games developed off things it did.

System Shock 2 was a pretty great game either way though, although it did have some issues that you alluded to.

System Shock 2 is what one would call an influential classic. >>
>>344219384
You can turn them off in Bioshock though, they patched it.

You can't say that you can mod SS1 to allow mouse control to people that complain about the controls and then hold Bioshock's handholding biochambers against it since they can be turned off too.
Same goes for the Weapon degrading in SS2, the developers released a patch for that if you're a baby.

Sorry but no. I've replayed the game at least 5 times, and the combat was shit every single time. It does not hold up.

The enemies don't know how to walk around corners, so all you end up doing is leaning around walls and popping their ass until they explode.

The only area that even came close to having decent combat was the groves, since they were more open than the other areas, but even then all the AI knew how to do was walk at you in a straight line.

And don't get me started on the Shodan fight. What a complete fucking joke that was.

My complaint in the first place was that the enemies in SS are just as retarded as doom enemies. They walk at you in a straight line, and can't walk around corners. Which is fine in a fast paced action game like doom, but for a "tactical" game like system shock it just doesn't work at all.

I love it when more people genuinely appreciate good things I appreciate. It makes me feel doubly good for the creator, if they're not an insufferable twat.

It drives me nuts when people don't genuinely appreciate it though, but act like they're lowering themselves to play and enjoy something beneath them, on terms they don't fully understand or care about to begin with. The hipster types treat it like playing old games is charity and they're somehow better people for throwing that bone.

The ones who've only found it recently, and genuinely enjoy it on its own terms for what it is and what games were at the time, are usually great.

Not for the game directly but you can massively improve MIDI music across your whole system

>Go find on the internet Sound Canvas VA VST 1.03 and run a keygen and install that shit
>Get a program called Loopmidi, Coolsoft VirtualMIDISynth, and SAVIHost
>Make a Loopmidi port called SC-55
>Put SAVIHost.exe where SOUND Canvas VA installed, rename it to Sound Canvas VA.exe
>Run it, go to Devices>MIDI, select the SC-55 midi device
>Hit the Options>System button on the Sound Canvas interface, change SC-8820 to SC-55
>Have Sound Canvas VA.exe run on Windows startup and keep it minimized (theres an option to minimize to systray)
>Now in Coolsoft VirtualMIDI Synth settings go to the default device dropdown and select SC-55

There, now your system uses a glorious emulated SC-55 instead of shitty Microsoft GS Synth. A bit complex to set up but well worth it. Adds a huge amount of depth to the sound. Way better than fucking with soundfonts could ever do.

Here's a comparison of what before & after would sound like:

I never said it was complicated. I said enjoy it on its own terms for what it is and what games were at the times, and hipsters don't fully understand or care about that.

If you can't read, it's ok. Just go to a waifu thread where there's plenty of pictures to look at instead.

Got it and playing through it. Fuck is it weird to maneuver in.

Just SS1 Shodan's face is far more intimidating to me than she ever was in SS2.
