Daily reminder that everything that happens past chloe getting shot is in max's head, trying to deal with her best friend dying after she waited years to contact her, even after she got back to arcadia bay. The "nightmare" at the end is her subconsciousness trying to get her to back to reality. Sacrificing chloe is accepting her death and moving on, and sacrificing arcadia bay is letting the tornado (her grief) wipe her out and going insane. All the people in the cafe in her dream represents the people that will "die" for her if she goes insane, and the edgy "cereal" max she is talking to is the part of max's mind that wants to accept reality and snap out of it, while chloe represents the opposite part.
Going from max the socially awkward to being max the awesome superhero saving the day and befriending everyone with her time powers reflects her delusion that she can make everything perfect and reverse chloes death. Those being mad about the endings and that the choices you made didn't have an effect on it is missing the entire message the game is trying to convey. Being left empty at the end is your way to feel max's pain and hopefully also accept chloe's death in the same painful way she did.

Unrelated but I have to say, this ""game"" was overall pretty good until the ending, I'm not a sociopath so of course I let Chloe die, but I went back and checked out the other ending just out of curiosity.
My god, it's so bad. Driving through the town where hundreds of people (including your friends and family) have died and smiling about it. It put such a bad taste in my mouth that it pretty much ruined my entire experience of the game.

That ending was pretty lacking though actually I think its the right choice from a certain point of view.
First you don't know for sure that letting Chloe die will for sure stop the storm. Just your intuition on that one. You could have already fucked up time enough that you can't fix it back anymore. Second it seems like if you're going back in time to let her die you're giving up on your powers for good and it would be pretty easy to use them to save over a dozen towns in your lifetime to make up for the mess you made.
Still retarded to tear up the picture in that ending though. She'll feel pretty stupid if the storm is just the beginning of nature trying to fuck her shit up. At least if she holds onto it she can always change her answer whenever she wants.

I'm kind of sad that I got spoiled on a fair portion of the game and on Chloe before I got a chance to play it.
If I ever play it now I'm just going to automatically hate Chloe and whatever she does even though I'm only somewhat aware of her role in the story and her personality (and the choice ending).
Its like the Two Best Friends playthrough of the walking dead, where they already decided they hated Kenny within 5 minutes of meeting him and spent the entire two seasons shitting on him and wanting him to die. Then when it came time for them to choose between Kenny or Jane, their choice had already been made and they had absolutely no hesitation.
