Broquest musicdev here. The day you've all been waiting for has finally arrived.
>>
>>344211590
That is: the day our team gives up. There's a bit more to it though.
>>
>>344211590
What day might that be?
>>
Oh, it took this long to die? I thought it ended long ago.
>>
Is this a thing anyone is supposed to care about?

We were pretty much in terminal phase.
Sometimes we'd keep posting content but... ded.
We do have a novel worth in lore, plenty of art, music and docs, but the project itself will probably get stagnant again until somebody else takes over.
I'll probably fix the rest of the songs I've got and post some DL link here. Next team of nodevs will have it slightly easier if they feel like reviving this project again.

The only thing I'm proud of is that at least we didn't pull a Starbound. Team was pretty bro-tier.
>>
>>344212607
I'm only vaguely familiar with this project. Is there a simple repository with all the asset stuff you mentioned?
>>
>>344211730
Didn't this die years ago already?
>>
>>344212607
Eh starbound will at least get made
And works inside of this
>>
>>344212607
Any chance of ever posting that art and lore?

I wasn't around when this was supposed to be a "thing" but liked reading about the different character concepts.
>>
>>344213759
There's actually a thread on /tg/ about Broquest right now.

>>>/tg/48147202

If I can remember how to crossboard link.
>>
>>344213148
For now I'm just preparing my own assets. I had about 120 music tracks done, but I'll release about 75 because I want to recycle some of my stuff.
>>344213342
We went dark. The project was alive and well until a few months ago I'd say. We've been through a lot of shit.
>>344213759
I'll ask the guys. I was the composer. They have another one besides me, also pretty good. I eventually stopped making stuff because of a weird curse or something.

Omg finally I can take this opportunity

Would anyone like to collaborate with me on a game? I'm a musicfag and I also do the character design.

It would be a puzzle strategy RPG. Basically, the battle system goes like this: you can choose a set of commands to use for each battle (like in Megaman battle network). There are many playable characters who join your party throughout the game, and each has a different set of commands available. The enemy also has a set of commands, though.

Here's the catch: your selection is random. Well, kinda. The game is kinda like minesweeper in that you can choose one block each turn, and it's only revealed to you what it is after you choose. There is an indicator on each row on how many of your commands there are (blue) and how many of the enemy's (red). Pic related is an example of how it'd work (I didn't check if my example was mathematically possible. I'd have the computer make up the grids in the actual game.)

There are, of course, more typical RPG elements such as a health bar, damage, and levels. Also there's gonna be quite an in-depth story.

Now that Broquest is done for, I think I can manage to steer the wheel and create something that will live up to its forgotten legacy. Get some of your guys on it, OP. My skype is pl4ntm4n

Which we were, but those small projects are fragile.

While I worked on Broquest I joined several other projects waiting for the whole thing to move forward, but it was pretty sluggish and got worse instead of better. Recently something happened and I found myself unable to work as much as before.

This whole thing helped me get somewhat better and made me try different styles and instruments. That's ok. I'm checking github atm. I'll eventually post the whole thing either there or on the public open source thingy.

What's left of the team probably is.
>TFW lurking on all our team meetings, listening to dev ideas and putting them to practice on rpg maker to check how they would work.
I was hyped actually. Game seemed fun.

For example, we had decided that dungeons would have different paths depending both on the player's observation and on which bro you chose. The system was a bit like Golden Sun but with every bro having their own skills, better exploration and smallquests. The idea was to keep it simple but replayable.
I still think at least this part wasn't so far-fetched. Could be done in a day or so.

>What kind of game was it supposed to be?
Turn based combat RPG based on mocking generic clichés, but also srs at some parts.
Bros were going to be a bit like a less hardcore version of Kichikuou Rance. Some of them could die if you fucked up big time, but that wasn't supposed to happen.
>Were there any programmers on the team?
a wizard god and some apprentices.
>Did a prototype get made, or was it just a bunch of people working on assets?
We did make a prototype, then decided to remake it better.

a VN is a much more realizable project.
Sure it still takes effort, but the brunt of it is art and writing. You don't have to create gameplay, balance things, etc.

>Project Hate Machine
They had a thread a couple months back, apparently they're a bit on the terminal side as well, lacking animators/being too lazy to create animations and shit
>>
>>344218026
That was the second attempt, this is the third? Fourth? I'm not even sure.
>>
From what I remember, didn't shwig's attempt involve a programmer trying to make a 3d engine for a 2d game?
>>
>>344225572
Yeah, asset creation is the big scary wall to me making a videogame, so I'm probably gonna go full text based to start with and maybe slowly add some measure of graphics eventually.
>>
>>344223406
RPG maker tends to be a bit limiting as far as game creation engines go. You have to put in so much work to get around said limitations that you're better suited just using something else.

It doesn't help that RPG Maker games are notorious for use of stock and ripped assets to make rather sub par games.
>>

Not sure how much that'd fly honestly. There are aspects of the whole thing which are more than likely owned by their original creator. Then you have stuff like Shwig's designs and art as well.

to many of these characters are redundant or don't really seem like they'd be a good bro
Cheerful Druid looks to plain, and why need her when you already got the funner P'orc Druid?
Iron General and Evil Knight are defiently better fit as Villains, maybe Psion too
Viking man bland
Ninja Guardian just seems like a plain ninja, could be more interesting if he had some other gimmick other than being another strong silent type character, maybe saying Japanese Proverbs or something
you really don't need a PTSD Ranger, Seasoned Relative, and Undead warrior, i'd imagine to much of their dialog would be similar, you know all being old and warriors, if any to be gone i'd say get rid of PTSD Ranger
i'd say the Necromancer and Wizard are to similar
the Devil and and the Con Artist are to similar
Samurai looks to bland (if the theme is all Japanese stand ins are bugs)
Shaman to bland

>Cheerful Druid looks to plain, and why need her when you already got the funner P'orc Druid?
different near quintessential archetypes
Cheerful druid is that character you meet that you meet early on that hasn't really interacted with people much before and you convince them to come visit the world with you, the other is the team mascot
P'orc a meh anyways, Kobold Trapper is the better character

>Iron General and Evil Knight are defiently better fit as Villains, maybe Psion too
all villains

>Viking man bland
He can always be expanded upon, he has a spot of honor seeing as he's in the original 4

>Ninja Guardian
one of those added on characters

>PTSD Ranger
He'd be the first one to cut, but I feel he has a place in the game as besides uncle he directly ties into the Frostborn invasion from years before and would bring some more depth to that plotline

>Seasoned Relative
don't you dare shit talk Uncle

>Undead Warror
don't you dare shit talk Yorick

>Wizard
not relevant, one of those added characters.
I think we were planning on not making the misunderstood necromancer a bro, though I cba to look it up

>con artist
Would have served as some cryptic seller or something, he wouldn't have been a bro

>Samurai
always room for improvement. Antoher character that relates to the Sunrise islands besides catgirl helps

>Shaman
Wouldn't have been included, Amazon would have taken a taken some possible concepts from him (mostly for combat balancing, she wouldn't have changed much (if at all really) character wise (which I remember people being pissed when we had mentioned it in a thread)

>>344227956
Our writers did a great job doing a write up of a lot of the lore. It's quite a nice read really.

>>344228475
moral of the story is that stagnancy, laziness and people leaving without saying goodbye and leaving gaps in positions with no way to fill them asides from shilling and hoping someone can fit that position kills an ambitious project.
>>
>>344227659
To elaborate further on >>344228106

Cheerful Druid was one of the protagonist possible designs.

Iron General and Evil Knight are both enemy designs actually.

I can't remember if the viking is an old design or an enemy as well.

Necromancer's design I have no recollection of what it was used for. Same as Wizard, but most likely both are enemies.

Ninja is another enemy design.

Samurai bug is indeed another enemy.

There are a bunch more in that list which were added by random people after the project died.
>>
>>344229165
>Our writers did a great job doing a write up of a lot of the lore. It's quite a nice read really.

These projects tend to mostly fail due to poor management and lack of focus honestly. All the planning and thought in the world won't mean dick if people aren't actually working.
>>
>>344230192
That is a good point, but from the posts ive seen and the lore that has been posted, they fell into the trap of anyone creating something new: biting off more than they can chew. Dont make 80 characters all with a backstory and random dungeons. Start off slow and simple. Then build upon what worked. This is final fantasy 101
>>
>>344230570

>>344230192
This is essentially what happened minus the focus (unless you mean focus in terms of not being ambitious)

>>344230570
We hadn't even really reached that point, the problem is that we bled members and didn't have much in ways of replacing them, and people didn't work.
I'd say a big part of it was a lack of management, the team lead left at some part in and the person who could mostly be attributed as the team lead (though he was more a writer) is a soldier who doesn't have a lot of time and is rarely present.
The project would do well with someone telling what needs to be done and by when. We were all sort of left to do our own thing, without being told what really needs to be done, which quickly leads to no one doing shit.

Our souls might have left this mortal coil, but our immortal bodies will keep on shambling towards the hazy, undefined future that is BROQUEST.

If you're a programmer, you're welcome to join. But at least our programmer-turned-artist will put the pen down and get to keyboard.

Hopefully we'll have something in TWO YEAR-ARIDOOS.

That'd mean that pretty much everything that has artwork would become a bro/prominent NPC.

Pretty much every piece of Shwig's artwork has been reused as a bro at some poitn.
>>

I'm cautiously hopeful for this BroQuest release.
>>
>>344229165
PLEASE post a link to the lore at some point. I'd love just to see how you connected all the bros into a coherent world.

Unless this magically unkills itself so you feel the need to keep it secret until something physical comes around, then godspeed.
>>
Say, if anyone wishes to take up these concepts/characters/lore that are public and make a BroQuest game, a paid for instance, can anyone complain?
Like, that purple fag made pretty much all of the cool character concepts. Could he claim its his in court?
I say this cause Ive seen BroQuest mentioned outside of /v/, and if someone took it up to make an actual game I could see them banking on the hype of it being made alone.
>>
>>344235643
Funny that you won't read most of the lore. You'll be given some hints and you will explore and discover. Ask npcs, read item descriptions or investigate dungeons.

Tomes a la Morrowind were not planned, but...

>Why is it that even /a/ can make a game, but /v/ can't?

/v/ is fucking huge and is thought by most to be the worst board for a reason, it would be no different from asking /b/ to make a game.

/vg/, /vr/, and /vp/ are much more compartmentalized and so it's much easier to get a group game or mod project going on those boards.
>>
>>344238617
Mind you /vp/ is making a Pokemon game, and /vg/ has /agdg/ with a surprising number (more than 0) of fairly successful games.
>>
>>344238617
This is kinda accurate, but also not. The big reason is that you need a relatively small group of devoted individuals of moderate skill. Not only that, but you also need decent management and direction.

Honestly, /a/ got lucky.

>cant go on my adventure with the Iron General , Dwarf Mechanic , Rank and File Soldier, and Warrior Girl

>>
>>344238746
Yeah, but how much of an influence does /agdg/ have on those games, like say Risk of Rain? I would imagine in most cases it would more like 'Anon's Game with a bit of help from AGDG' than 'Anon and AGDG's Game'.

I know about Pokemon Clover and Sage/Aus. Whether it's worse than /v/ or not they have a much more manageable environment at least to help stand a better chance.

/vr/ also fucking loves making Doom mods and maps.

>>344238891
Well yeah, that too. I don't think /v/ will have a lot of those folk though.

>Honestly, /a/ got lucky.

That's probably it.

/v/ has those people, but also the size of /v/ is kind of one of its downsides in this case. It has so many people that finding the good is a needle in the haystack problem, especially when a project gets popular.

Theres also the fact that 4chan in general is a shitty place to gather dedicated people because of how many trolls and listless people visit this site.
>>
>>344240791
Some one is making a non-lewd game about the tower girls, I know this because I played the demo, how ever it's been months since I've last heard of it and I've since deleted it from my computer.
>>
>>344240812
/v/ has been coming together to fucking sing songs together for three years in a row now. I'm sure we can eventually make a game.
>>
>>344239892
But how much influence does the board have to have on the game in order to have come from there? Is just having people who frequent that board not enough? Do there need to be threads asking for what people on the board want?
>>
>>344241042
How many princesses are there now? I remember seeing at least two more kinds of dragon princesses so the roster must be bloated as fuck by now.
>>
>>344241362
Singing requires little to no work and prep. Putting together a game however requires assloads of it.
>>
>>344240157
The tower girls game that they're working on now is super tedious. I can see how its to set up for the big battles and world changing consequences but those aren't particularly good or interesting right now either. I think they tried to include too many things at once instead of making any one aspect of the game really solid.

>>344240812
I think even if you wanted to do something you'd get wiped of the board instantly. Other /v/ would be better for putting something together just because there's less traffic. Sometime last year they started working on a sequel to 7th Stand User and an original 3D platformer Anton & Coolpecker. I guess both are still going because they put out progress reports somewhat recently.
>>
>>344240812
Finding people isnt the hard part, finding dedicated people is the hard part. Anyone can code, but coding for more than a week on the same project takes dedication.
>>
>>344240753
Orc all day every day.
>>
>>344241531
Honestly, projects on /v/ last quite some time. Broquest alone can attest to this. The bigger problem however is that the more popular the project becomes, the more problems it brings.

I mean again, Broquest is a fine example. When the project first started, everyone was excited, a bit too much so.

Then when things had to be changed/removed, you started getting people who were personally offended. Their favorite character was removed? SHIT GAME. Now they begin to troll the threads/spread misinformation.

The catgirl thing was a prime example of the misinformation/shitposting. Shwig basically had to put the design on hold cause he spent too much time on that one thing, with the intent to revisit, and everyone lost their mind.

Too many progress reports and basically people start trolling even harder.
>>
>>344212607
>we made everything except an actual game
even people posting garbage unity platformers are better than you
>>
>>344241920
Well, its a bit of both honestly. You need to find someone who can do a specific thing, do it well, and do it reliably.

For instance, anyone can draw, but theres a massive difference between a stick figure and an actual drawing.
>>
>>344242829
Exactly. And most of the people on this site are incredibly lazy as well, at least I know I am. Otherwise there'd be more helpers.
>>
>>344242161

Broquest really needed to tone down its scale. People in charge should have been draconian in making sure that no new ideas would be considered until a certain amount of (coding) progress was made.

No new party members/NPCs or plot hooks until they got a working battle system, sprites for the existing characters, completed areas, etc.

In the end it was all idea guys and Shwig doodling ideas from the idea guys.
>>
>>344243059
I can only speak for myself, but personally one big reason I don't do much is simply because I don't like wasted effort.

Making all of this crap to have it never finished and/or other people use your work without your consent just makes it all a waste of time.

There's no end to the princess. Every time I look there are even more with newer mechanics.

>>344242161
I guess that's true. It takes way too much time to put something together for so many progress reports. Broquest was like a 24/7 thread.

You know what game actually worked? /V/irgin Quest, because the guy made it in RPG maker and posted progress in one thread a week. A thread could ask for android mascots, autism dungeons, skeleton waifus, or gender swaps for the whole party and you'd get something the next week because he didn't have to try and delegate work between 8+ unaccountable people. More than anything it worked because people getting hyped and wanting to contribute art/music/ideas were able to, because there were actually game mechanics in place.
>>
>>344242161
Broquest was always a clusterfuck. It was basically one or two artists and a bunch of ideas guys with nobody actually knowing how to make a video game. I've lost track of the number of times people have tried to restart it.
>>
>>344243279
While in theory that sounds great, in practice that tends to actually hurt more than not.

Ironically, what you're talking about is one of the main reasons why the attempt with Shwig failed.

By saying we don't need X until we get Y, you're making it so when/if you DO get Y, you won't have X ready for it. For instance, if you had a battle system ready, but no artwork/sprites ready, that piles onto the time needed for the project, and more time is always a bad thing.

Using the prior attempt as an example, art assets were ignored/put off until the game engine was ready. But by then, a lot of interest in the project had dried up, and there were much fewer people interested, and thus finding people who were decent/skilled became even harder.

What you need is good management. Having multiple groups working on their individual parts to make one cohesive whole makes things work better in the long run. That said, you do have to know how to manage scope as well.

The quality control is impressive, but there's a point when people just need to fucking stop. A lot of boards have this stupid mentality that good things have to last forever, and all it leads to is something good being turning into a bloated, festering, fly-attracting corpse. I'm not saying Tower Girls is going to turn to shit, but it's expanding vertically with new and different features on top of each other. That's fine if it's just theorycrafting and ideas, but it'll make it a bitch to turn into anything more without consciously cutting off a lot of fat.
>>
>>344238891
>Honestly, /a/ got lucky.
I know someone who knew someone on the team.
The reason KS got made was because the dudes on the team were very strict about getting work done.
It got done because there was never a moment where it was allowed to stagnate and lose steam.

>>344241362
sings are easy as fuck
all it takes is one dedicated person to put together all the submissions, and takes no more than a dozen minutes at most for any random person to contribute to it.
A game requires countless hours of dedicated work over the course of numerous years (if the scope of the project is that large)
>>
>>344246558
While thats great that they had someone managing the team well, I'd still say they got lucky in that people actually did their work at all.

Working for free often causes people to not take well to that kind of strictness. Though, those are also the people you generally don't need. That said, it can cause a project to fail simply cause you can't find/keep enough people around.

Strict or not, they got super lucky finding some dedicated people willing to put up with that.
