I've played both the US and Jap versions extensively and the nonexistent difficulty is mindboggling. I seriously ran from ALL of the random battles. ALL OF THEM. And guess what, I had NO problems with ANY of the boss fights. No amount of charm and atmosphere can redeem that. I'm sorry. Compare the difficulty to something like FFIII DS and you'll understand why CT is such a thoughtless and dull experience challenge wise.

This. Chrono Trigger is piss-easy. Irredeemably so, and it only gets its positon from being babby's first jrpg. Final Fantasy V surpasses it supremely from a sheer gameplay standpoint and I play games for gameplay not to be spoonfed dumb stories.

Nothing in the game besides the dragons and Iron Giant were remotely difficult. It's one of the most unique RPG stories you can get even nowadays. It kind of a hybrid of DQ and FF in a way, both stylistically and story-wise. It blends humour with darkness but it does get a lot bleaker than you'd expect. It's an essential RPG. Nothing about it is mediocre, it's just a standard-fare 90's Square RPG, which means pretty good.
