Pokemon Go uses the same Infrastructure as Ingress. Ingress allowed people to send in a picture of a landmark/Building and submit it for them to validate. They made a lot of those same landmarks into Stops and Gyms. America has a shit ton of Churches. I live in a suburb or Chicago and I have over 5 in just a few blocks of me. A majority of the people playing on my campus are team red, but there are a few that were team blue that took over one of our gyms at the park in town. The reds that were at the park couldn't get it back, so another friend and I went to take it back. Turns out someone in the building by the "gym" saw us all gathered there and assumed something shady was going on, and I guess called the cops. They all showed up and laughed at us for why we were all there.
This has been a great start to Pokemon Go.
