Why is SGDQ so Boring? They've taken all of the personality

Why is SGDQ so Boring?

They've taken all of the personality & soul out of the event. It literally feels like watching a CHEO Telethon now. None of the old fan favorites are around, every runner is a literal who, Crowd looks like they're about to fall asleep at all times, No interesting people allowed on the mic, No jokes, No fun allowed.

And the donation comments are so repetitive and annoying. This event is going to die out within a year or two, if it keeps on this track.
>>
The games this year sucked ass.

Only good one was Jedi Academy rest are shit that nobody knows about
>>
I never understood the appeal of speedrunning but thats just me
>>
>>344067126
they are trying to make it family friendly and have taken out all the good games in favor of a select few that they can maximize profi- i mean charity donations by making endless incentives.

Gotta kill/save those animals, anon!
>>
I don't keep up with this aside from shitposting on /v/, was the Evil Pigs guy back again this year?
>>
It's made like a million dollars in donation and gets like a hundred thousand people watching it every time since 2012.
Then the organizers realized they can use that platform to sell stuff.
As soon as that happens every jagged little edge of something's personality starts getting planed away until you have nothing but a perfectly smooth and boring sphere of an event intended to offend as few people as possible.
>>
>>344067391

Greetings from Germany! Thanks to everyone who makes this event possible, been watching since 2015 and I'm having a blast! Also, Kill those animals! We need to save the frames here, people!

Americans love money more than anything. Jokes are censored and runners kept on a tight leash.

>People use to joke about how one day SGDQ would be policed and told what they can/cannot say or do

I honestly wonder if each runner is given a piece of paper with key notes on how to be bland and boring. Its like they're not allowed to have any fun.

on top of that I'm sure the runners are also scared because they don't want to be banned for saying something bad by accident or blacklisted from participating again, so they act as boring and bland as possible.

I used to think anons were bullshitting about the police-ing of what they can say on stream and stuff but yesterday during the Ratchet & Clank run the announcer started saying "We have a $100 donation here fro- uh oh never mind... We have a $20 dollar donation..." and just ignored the first one.
100 dollars is a pretty impressive amount regardless, how fucking offensive could it have been to not have even finished the donation read-out?
I can see the lack of fun though, I remember a Super Monkey Ball run from a few years back and honestly got me curious about speedrunning but holy fuck these days it feels like such a soulless event.

Selective memory. You don't remember the boring runs from others year, because surprise, they were fucking boring. Everyone expects maximum hype for every run 24/7 for the whole event when there's always been only a handful of really fun moments.

I've watched agdq since summer 2013 and not much has changed
only negative turns are the sellout box on the screen and lack of bonus stream
much has improved, like hosts reading the donations at appriopiate times, better couch policies and better audio (this so much,)
/V/ doesn't enjoy the GDQs because they either got bored or they just legitimately don't want to enjoy the games - most of the threads is filled with complaining about how every game is boring. I personally have the stream open whenever i'm at the computer and I've enjoyed the majority of them
and /V/ has expectations so high it's unbelievable

>Why is SGDQ so Boring?

Simple. They've sterilised it.

See, they need more money. So they need to appeal to more people. So they need the normie crowd.

All those Touhou dolls and cosplaying and stuff? Gives a bad image to normies. Turns them off, they turn off, no donations.

So they gutted that stuff. Made it as generic as they can possibly make it for a wider appeal. So now twitters and facebook accounts and whatnot can advertise it, new people can tune it and not see all that stuff and potentially donate.

The irony? It's mostly all our fault.
All the constant complaints of "cringe".
Man, those dolls are cringey.
Man, that cosplay is cringey.
Man, these guys sitting together and singing is cringey.
So they responded to it, by removing the cringe.
No more dolls. No more cosplay. No more audience on screen. Focus on the runner and the game. Nothing else.

Turns out that "cringe" is what made it fun.
And sure, there's still cringe here and there, but it's either from awkwardness or, in the case of some dumbasses like those dudes who ran Crash Bandicoot, they get banned.

So now it's plain. It might be boring, but it's safe.

Isn't this what you wanted?

In super metroid there's a point where they can save some animals or let them die. Letting them die is faster.

The moment we saw the increase of woman was the moment you should've realized it was over. It happens to nearly everything and women are just flags to let you know

Hi guys, this is autism.jpg
32 KB, 500x500
>Why is SGDQ so Boring?
Because speedrunning is autistic and it is not actually fun.

The fun in GDQ and the speedrunning in general are the crazy, unsocial, madmen who are committing these acts and the drama that ensues when they fuck up at something. Like all drama on the internet, laughing at autistic manchildren who think their "profession" is something worthy of praise and that they're doing something for society, is very fun entertainment. You have Cosmo who has always been an unstable lolcow until he finally snapped and became Narcissa. You have Siglemic who shits in diapers and left in shame when the drama caught fire. You have people like Chibi who can't keep their mouth shut and keeps giving out cringe-worthy information or does the most absurd actions. You have people like the "can you stop" girl. And not to mention Goose who managed to give the biggest self-awareness truth-bomb to the community in one blow creating drama that no man has done in the scene yet.

These people are nothing but drama. That's where the entertainment lies. Not in their "sport" of finding the most obscure glitches, but in their social awkwardness.

If you can only remember a single moment from a gdq, you never really enjoyed it in the first place.

Also, that gdq was just as shit as this one is.
>>
>>344070338

Since Super Metroid seems like it was built for speed runners, they end all games done quick marathons with it. At the end of the game, you're given a choice if you want to to go out of your way to save some animals or not. They made it a thing for the viewers to decide what's more important, saving their lives or shaving a few seconds extra off the run.
>>

Then, at least for me, its like "well i already saw this game last year and the year before, and the other games I really don't give a flying fuck about, and there's a 99% chance the guy playing and the people behind him are no-fun as fuck, so why watch at all?"

SGDQ was only novel when speedrunning was novel, but it isn't anymore. Seeing somebody glitch through half of OoT for the first time was cool, but nobody cares about seeing Pokemon and Zelda runs for the 10th year in a row, and lesser known games won't draw a crowd. Speedrunning itself is dead. About 5 people watched NASA, and then they forgot to check if their hotel had internet.

They don't run as SGDQ or AGDQ anymore. They show up and sometimes talk but they don't run. A lot of them were ruled too crude for the gdq management because of swearing and such and they don't want them to stream.
>>
Biggest problem is the blocks, I don't want to see a bunch of shitty NES/SNES action platformers, or all the Super Mario 64 ripoffs all in a row. Split that up and that'll help. Have your big name games during prime time, but otherwise just make it more random. Also, why the fuck is everyone on 1 station? Have 2 so that you can be setting up one while the other is in use, no more huge gaps between games while people struggle to unplug controllers. Still only stream 1 thing at a time, just switch back and forth between the setups.

Other big problem is that a lot of the runners just don't have any charisma. I get it, they're there to play the games cause that's what they're good at. At least get some interesting people on the couch. Some of the runs, even if the games themselves are good, are just terrible because either no one talks and it's weird, or the people talking are just super awkward and people try to just laugh it off. Look at Dota tournaments, whoever runs those was smart enough to get people in who play off the awkwardness, or who are professional enough to power through it.
>>
>>344079145

Definitely has its own flaws, the elite always dwindles down in hobbies over time, with no new blood coming in and getting there themselves that'll also fail.
>>
>>344079248
people just get silent banned from running any games

like they'll get denied from running despite pulling viewers or money

iirc bigjon is an example
>>
>>344079350
Not the whole hobby dying, but people's interest. It's natural. Most people don't have a single hobby they stick to forever. People should move on once it's time.
>>
>>344079538
worse, the elitist run hobbies I've found actively discourage new people.

I remember the guilty gear community way back purposely treating newcomers as non-people until they left, then bitching endlessly that new people don't stick around.
>>
>>344079475
why the staff of every event has to became so nihilistic jews?
>>
>>344079248

People got banned from last AGDQ left and right for being poor representatives.

This is no different than anything else.

Oldschool MMA was fucking amazing. You literally had guys from every discipline in there doing crazy shit. There was no uniform restrictions, so some guys fought in boxing shorts, other guys had full on karate gi's and shit.

Then it got popular.

Then we started seeing restrictions.

Normalized uniforms.

Then the rules started coming in.

No elbows. No other blows.

No differnet with AGDQ. Popularity basically toned it down so everyone could enjoy it.

You'll never hear someone say nigger on the stream again.

Well a lot of it isn't so much that the runners don't have charisma but that they don't have charisma when talking exclusively about the game. When they stream they don't spend the whole time talking extensively about how all the tricks theyre doing work, they're talking about random shit and going on tangents.
Theres definitely a feeling of everyone having to talk very carefully and spend a lot of time thinking about exactly what to say because nobody wants to slip up and accidentally say fuck or something and get perma banned from the speedrunning community.

I don't know why you're being so stubborn either. Also reading the schedule is hard? One page? You wouldn't be even slightly interested in knowing what's coming up?

The question is asked almost EVERY thread.

The bid war is brought up EVERY few minutes

The game is run and hyped up EVERY event.

I don't know how it's possible to not know what it's about if someone's genuinely been watching for how ever many years the event has been running unless you tune in for like half of one run.
