If it's a handheld then it makes sense. I wouldn't worry too much as Nintendo supports lots of controllers for the Wii U.

Standard controls + touchscreen is godly. Sure some games can take the touchscreen gimmick too far, but it really shines when used for small quality-of-life things. Things like inventory management, menus, and map screens.
Hell, one of the small things I like from the DS Pokemon games is the fact that each move in the battle screen is a "button". You can pick the moves using the standard controls too, but it's more convenient to just press the move on the screen. It's little things like that where touch controls really shine.

Also, you don't need 540p or 720p on a handheld if it means gimped visuals and shoddy frame rates. I think 360 or 480p would be fantastic for a handheld console. 3DS works surprisingly well with 240p. Doesn't need much more pixels on the screen.

Handhelds dont have the privilige of being able to alter their hardware every year like mobile phones. Theres a new phone out every week of every month.
Handhelds have to be affordable AT RELEASE. Which means scaling back the hardware. Meaning the second one is released its already being beaten by phones.
The hardware also has to stay consitant for the entire life cycle which is 5-7 years.
Are you going to pay $500+ for a fucking handheld? I seriously doubt it. Having to be affordable means having a realistic and most likely scaled back hardware components.
The Vita tried to go for more power and a better screen and had to ramp the fuck out of their memory cards to compensate.

I've played a handful of games on Vita. Some games are really good, some games write checks the handheld can't cash. It's not the Vita's fault that my roommate only bought Killzone, Uncharted, and Borderlands for it - which all ran like shit, but that was my take away from it.
