Reading the patent it seems to me like they want to have a core handheld device (the touch screen) that you can slide into different peripherals, including the one show in your pic but also one more suited to console gameplay (it specifically says the analog pad may instead be an analog stick). Basically trading the ability to put it in your pocket for comfort.
The patent also talks a lot about a vibrator in the device and how it interacts with the speakers.

If they expect that thing to be the NX' main controller there had better be another analog whatever. Because the only thing they'd be able to do for camera control at that point would be gyro and I'm not going to wave the goddamn controller around every time I want to turn the goddamn camera.
