The last time I tried was in 2010. I can get to the part where Balrog turns into his giant meatball form, but I always die before I can get an idea on his attack patterns so I eventually got sick of going through all the bullshit before that part.

I'm thinking of going with the original because you can't really beat the original but I thought of maybe playing one of the 3DS versions, the one that's true to the source, not the 3D bullshit.
Just keep going at it, eventually you'll be able to reach him pretty consistently. When you are able to do that, then start saving up the health jar for him. It's better to use the health jar before reaching him if you're still learning how to reach him, because you get more time to train. Also, after the parts with the random blocks falling, farm the hearts on the right by going back up the random corridor, they respawn.

Hey, that's something I realised, I played this back in 2007 or so when I wasn't really into fandoms
Later I got into stuff like mlp and furry, so of course my expectations for fandoms in general went down the drain
But Cave Story never had any of this, and that's kinda nice for a change.
I got to the last boss-segment and discovered it was a boss-rush kinda' deal.
Beat the first 3 bosses and then the professor-motherfucker turned into a weird ball or some shit.
After getting my ass kicked several times by that, I tried a few dozen more times but eventually I felt I'd wasted so much time on it I didn't even care if I won or lost anymore.
I'll go back to it one day but that day won't be anytime soon.
By the way, I felt the game was quite short. Is there literally a ton of hidden extra content or something?

Stage 2: A pain in the ass but you can tediously recover all the damage you take so whatever
Stage 3: Hard at first but once you learn the trigger points for waves of enemies it's not so bad, just take it slow and steady and don't forget to pick up the missile expansion
Heavy Press: Nemesis the shit out of him before he can do any significant damage, he goes down quickly
Ballos 1: Dash around the rectangle, his pattern isn't so bad. Nemesis is probably better but I'm bad with it so I stuck with the spur
Ballos 2: Stand to the left of the throne before he goes ball form, move to the right when he appears and jump in his eye for a charged spur shot. Get out, get another spur shot, and on the third bounce, he'll pause for a bit. Jump in his eye again and spam the shit out of your missiles
Ballos 3: Keep running while shooting nemesis or spur upwards
Ballos 4: Stand just to the left of where he appears, get hit by the spike, i-frame your way into his eye and spam missiles

OP, it took me like two weeks of tries to beat it for the first time.
Two tips:
1) After you get past ((the most random room in the game)), grab the two hearts to your right and fly back up into that room. The hearts should respawn.
2). Use the life pot during either of the boss fights when you're low on health. (If you used it before hell, you might want to consider restarting the game)

Cave Story, including Hell, is easy. It's just a matter of having enough brain cells to rub together to memorize the patterns.
The only difficult part of Hell is the random blocks falling at the second part, because there's no pattern to learn. The rest is just determination.
