I think Disgaea is an awful game due to horrendously unbalanced gameplay that leads to repetitive, simplistic tactics. Some mechanics are somewhat interesting but it's all implemented very poorly. The characters are also really annoying and the story is way too cheesy. At least there are cute girls I guess.

Yeah, but once you get statisticians you can quickly repeatedly grind to 9999 for banked level reincarnation bonuses, then you can get all the subclass bonus stuff and yadda yadda. Then you start item world diving to kit them out.

I enjoyed the first one, but I found Flonne irritating as hell and I would have preffered less of the love and peace nonsense.
Conversely I really enjoyed 2 and the love story therin.
I didn't think all that much of 3 and didn't bother with the rest of them.
It's a good RPG and it's nice that you don't have to grind like an autismo to do the main story, but it's also insane how much you have to grind to get all the other endings and how ridiculously arbitrary some of them are.
Also I really dislike how the cool story characters are massively outscaled by random OC characters you create. I'd rather even just the key story characters be the strongest even at the highest levels.

Long time Disgaea autist here.
2 has been my favourite for years, nothing else could unseat it, but playing 5 finally did it. The quality of life changes for the discerning grind lover are just a fucking joy.
The only problem I had with it was the dub is atrocious, it's the first one I played in Japanese, but that's a minor concern. Also some of the evilities that make things easier are locked behind DLC characters, but fuck it, I can't say I don't get good value for money per hour with these games.

As a long time fan of the series and games related to it, I have some suggestions to make the games better.
First, make having more characters beneficial. It gets old destroying people with one character that soaked all the exp. Maybe have exp-shares, and have solo-exp give less. One of the main draws of this game is to be able to make your very own army, which is undermined by just fielding in the MC and destroying every level.
Second, I like the dichotomy of puzzle levels and combat levels but it does get old as those are really the only two types of levels. I think the series could benefit from different types of objectives.
Third, when you get to post game it becomes very hard to reach a power level equal to your next opponents. With levels and weapons becoming easier to come by, you really have to do your own math just to match the power the game is going to throw at you. Otherwise you just get dicked or you dick them. I don't have a simple solution for this one but hopefully someone smarter than me has one.

I like it but it feels so daunting to get back into. I played the first one and dropped close to 200 hours into back when it released for the first time but now it's up to like 5 or something with spin offs too and I can't imagine putting that time into every game up to the most current ones in order. I liked the humor but the gameplay always seemed shallow and less about strat and more about grinding. Characters dont hit very hard and once one character powers over the rest of your team its hard to catch them up level wise.
It also sucks trying to bring in a new class and having to bring them up to speed with the rest of your party.
On a lesser note i was not a fan of how the hub area was not on a grid and looked and felt weird in contrast to the gridded battles, but thats a really minor thing.
I only really played the first so if theyve changed it up more id consider jumping back in.

Item world would be your best bet then. Just a simple ten floors can really make a big difference in your damage output. Also if you don't already have one, make a mage. Being able to kill from a distance really helps.
