Most of the recent mistakes could easily be fixed by making them stop to pander to retards and modern console standards.
Risen 1 was the last truly good game from them because it was the last PC exclusive.
And i know there is a 360 version but that port got made later and is so bad that its one of the worst pc-to-console ports of all time.

Let's be honest here: there is a disagreement over what "RPG" vidya are. And I definitely agree that Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment are unmatched in their own subgenre of RPG. Morrowind will also always have a virulent fanbase behind it.
If anything, Gothic is the benchmark of predefined character RPG, the antithesis of Elder Scrolls, and the best one in that genre sans maybe Witcher, which is a spiritual successor to Gothic anyway.
Name a different game with 100+ NPCs with so much dialogue where you know them all by name.
Till this day I always play a Fire Mage whenever the game allows me to. Praise Innos.

Risen 1 is a PC game that got ported to console.
Risen 2 and Risen 3 are both multiplatform and got made with those platforms in mind.
One of the biggest changes and one of the worst is the combat system getting reduced to something that controllers can simply handle. If not for consoles they would have sticked to Risen 1s combat system and build upon it.

Back in the glorious old days of RPGs the games spread through eastern europe only thanks to mouth-to-mouth advertisements.
Most PC gamers in those countries will tell you that Gothic 1 and 2 are what RPGs should be. And Witcher only exists like it does because CDPR were huge Gothic fanboys and most of them got into gaming because of it.

There was no accident about Gothic's success and quality.
The market has changed, anon. Games with a mid-range but reliable consumer market are no longer wanted. It's all or nothing for most developers and publishers; make the next Cawadoody or not.
PB simply tries to adapt to that. So we didn't get great experiences that open-minded players would like, but big budget titles that try to pull in the big crowd of gamers.

And burried under it all, is an actual good combat system with good mechanics.
If you stop spamming the left click and start blocking, using short attacks, power attacks. Its actually legit enjoyable.

I think both have their charm. Although TES also had relatively predefined protagonists. The Eternal Champion of Arena and the Agent of Daggerfall both have preestablished friends/assiociates, etc. And the protagonist of Battlespire is a smug little shit. The complete blank slate that is not allowed to express even the remotest hint of personality started with Morrowind.
