You'll probably have more fun if you don't scout rush, even if some missions are kind of bullshit as a result.
Anime cast aside, the game does a pretty good job of getting you invested in your units. The generic units used to fill out your force aren't actually generic; they each have their own small background and personality quirks that provide benefits and downsides to using them along with unique phrases while proccing their passives or taking fire. The gameplay itself is solid enough and the game really loves it's tanks so you get plenty of cool WW2 themed designed in the fantasy world they've created.

I have watched a bit of anime, and the fucking beach vacation was awful as fuck. Other than that, I remember the game being very fun.

It's got some really good gameplay elements, takes the best of 2 and mixes it with 1 a bit (still has the segmented maps because muh PSP). The missions with the elite enemy unit were hard as fuck.
Story takes place during 1 and is pretty darker in tone.
Only released in Japan, but there's a translation patch.

Scouts are OP. Game punishes you for not using scouts. Using scouts is pretty dull. Commands are OP. Plotline is about who has the best blue ladies. When you have the better blue lady she decides to stop fighting so thousands more can die in "fair" warfare on both sides.
