if a game has prone/crawling/standing then i use C and X keys for both of those. i use Z if i have to to reset back to standing (if the game allows for that)

It can usually be configured. For some games it's better to have it as a toggle (games where you spend extended periods of time crouching), for others it's better to hold (good for easy crouch-jumping etc). Some games even let you assign a key to each.
