It's tough. The writing in 1 is clearly superior before they had to simplify the plot, but the combat is still pretty sketchy.
In 3, the plot and writing is pants-on-head moronic, but the combat is best, and the multiplayer is surprisingly great.
2 was best of both worlds and great overall, but if you take a step back, you realize that the entire plotline of ME2 could have been deleted without really affecting ME3. The biggest plot effect from ME2 comes from the DLC, after all.

Well they couldn't really do anything with ME2 since ME1 had already set everything up and ME3 was where the closure had to take place. Still, on it's own the plot of ME2 was entertaining enough I think. It's not like the overarching plot of the series matters anymore after ME3 shat on everything.
Mass Effect 2 was essentially "Building Your Team: The Game"
still it was a great game and the best in the series

I'd even go as far as saying FEAR 2 was better than FEAR 1. The atmosphere in FEAR 1 did nothing for me and you actually have to go out of your way to play like a pussy in order for the enemy AI to have a chance of doing anything besides maybe throwing a grenade and then dying on the spot.

1 was very good rpg, but equipment management was annoying. Also randomized loots were crappy. Awesome game tho.
2nd was simplier, but overall despite worse plot i enjoyed it much more. Also changing from heat to ammo was a nice idea imho.
i never finished 3rd one. shit went too bioware, and became boring, choices were cosmetic.

Fuck off, the entire Mass Effect series is shit. I pushed through 1 so I would understand 2, but dropped 2 after 10 hours. Shepard is the worst voiced protagonist of ANY videogame. His lines are terrible, the VA has no emotions, and half the time the dialogue lines aren't the same as what you selected.
Mix this with some incredibly average third person shooting and a generic story (with 4 or 5 cool characters throughout, admittedly) and you have a steaming pile of Bioware shit
