Agree, most devs knew they were sorta limited so they had to get creative and go for a nice style rather than making it look "real", like Crash, spyro and Parappa to name a few.

Definitely. The one problem was the PS1's rounding issues that caused weird 3D perspective distortion.

What is the best N64 had to offer? Banjo Tooie and Perfect Dark? They can't even compare to some of the games the PS1 somehow had running on it, and running smoothly too.

It's mostly down to art. PS1 had shit 3D, but the devs were smart and put some effort on designing stuff for it, so a lot of games still hold up to this day because of the good art styles. N64 had better 3D but mostly boring art and some shit that tried to go for a realistic look, which looks like shit nowadays. Nintendo games had good art, but third party ones were pretty shit.

Not sure if liking is the right word, but it is really nostalgic, and adds some charm I guess to the games released on that console.
>>
>>343916770
SNES could not perform 3D calculations natively, games like Star Fox had 3D chips embedded in the carts that could interface with the SNES hardware to draw to the screen, there is literally nothing in the SNES that allows 3D math to be performed. It's the exact same with 3D games like Virtua Racer on the Genesis. PS1, Dreamcast and N64 can all perform 3D math on the console itself.

Think before you post you fucking retard.

>>
I really love the way the texture moved in ps1 games, it gave games a weird feeling.
>>
>>343917792
By 3D calculations I mean "has the ability to natively process polygonal graphics", the PS1, Dreamcast and N64 all use 3D polygonal math to render their games; X,Y,Z coordinates etc... precision doesn't mean dick shit, the math is being performed, all that is differing is the rounding process, it is still 3D.

Not calling the PS1 a 3D console is pure idiocy, you evidently know nothing about how it works.
>>
>>343918028

Ratchet and Clank had perspective correct texture mapping; I don't think any PS2 games didn't.

It did have some questionable LoD effects. Insomniac had used LoD on Spyro to great effect but it was a little glitchy in R&C so you would see world objects swell or shift as you approached them sometimes. Nothing to do with hardware, just their implementation of LoD.

>>

I wouldn't say they look worse just that nobody could actually figure out how to program N64 games other than Nintendo and the devs who made Beetle's Racing Adventure. Meanwhile the PS1's greatest weaknesses (lack of floating-point implementation and crippling read times) had workarounds made by most devs so their effects were reduced.

Hi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnjie2G7_gQ
>>
I have a CRT with S-video for PSX and N64 right next to me

they both look like shit still
The N64 has objectively better gramfix but I usually prefer the PSX when it comes to 2D, and pretty much only Nintendo's first party games make good use of the 64's abilities anyway.

Quake on the n64 actually let you turn it off and Hexen64 let you turn sprite smoothing off or on.
Then you had other games that made hi res optional.
I miss when games on console would actually let you configure things how did options get worse as time went on and not better?

It really isn't the case. Whilst you might have Mario 64 and Banjo, you trade away third party games like Oddworld, Final Fantasy and more experimental titles like Vib Ribbon and Ape Escape.

Nintyfag who skipped the N64/PS1 generation and got both around 2002/3. Whilst there are classic titles I keep coming back to on N64 for sure, I play through Banjo every Summer alongside Sunshine, Wind Waker and MGS for example, there's a bigger variety of games I consistently play on PS1, (Exoddus, FFVII, Crash 2/3, CTR, Medievil to name a few)
>>

>Oddworld, Final Fantasy

eh

Most people here dont mention the actual gems of the n64 library like Ocarina, Majoras Mask, Banjo 1 + 2, Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Perfect Dark, Mischief Makers, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, Conkers Bad Furday, Killer Instinct, Diddy Kong Racing

PS1 had a better library overall in terms of quantity and variety but i don't think its heavy hitters had the quality of n64's big titles

The adage goes that ps1 had a hundred games you wanted to play and n64 had 10 that you couldnt stop playing.

I don't think either side is really right or wrong in terms of which system had a better library

The N64 had knockout titles, I'll give it that. I'd much rather stick in Mario Party 3 than Crash Bash, and still spend hours in Goldeneye MP with buddies.

It's as you said, the standout titles really stood out, but there's much more variety in the PS1 library.

Would a N64 in this day and age now that flash storage has become so cheap be superior to the PS1?
You could easily make N64 cartridges today with several gigabytes of storage, meanwhile the PS1 would probably still be stuck with a 700MB Cd-Rom

Ha, no. I pined for a Game Boy for years seeing how some of my friends were playing Pokemon. Then my parents and grandparents all got together to get me a GBA on Xmas '01. It's not like any one of them couldn't have afforded it on their own, it was more about how much I was allowed to be spoiled and coddled. Did you really think I was deserving of a Game Boy, games for it AND other shit on top of that? Laughable.

The next year they pulled off the same thing with a PS2. I was both incredibly happy with my gifts but also a little disappointed it wasn't a GameCube. In hindsight my family made the better choice, of course.

Firstly, you're playing a PC emulation with a fuckton of AA and upscaling done. Hardly the point made in your screenshots.

SEcondly, Spyro was IIRC one of the first 3d games ever to implement a LOD engine, which was how they managed to put so much shit into the levels - it's not really a fair comparison to try and say that PS1 graphcs as a whoile were better just because one game had such an innovative piece of software technology in it. Most other games just did the silent hill method where they hid most of the screen from view to let the graphcs that you could see look good.
