ZOE was an early PS2 game. It was impressive because it ran at 60FPS and had fast paced mech combat. The only other game that was remotely like it at the time was Omega Boost and that was mostly an on rails shooter for the PSX.
The reason the game sold well was because it included the demo for MGS2.

Well I actually agree with the sentiment I enjoy playing DMC1 more than ZOE1 and I think DMC1 is the better game.
But DMC1 came out in October 2001 while ZOE1 was back in March, ZOE1 was the game that really impressed me with the capabilities of this new generation, DMC1 didn't invent fast paced combat with 3D graphics and a silky smooth framerate.

ZOE does have that 'glorified tech demo' quality to it.
It came out near enough to the launch of the PS2 that nothing was really quite like it yet, and It was a good way to show off the capabilities of this new console, but the game itself ran out of ideas like 2 hours in then meandered around for like 3 more until abruptly ending.
ZOE1 is the kinda game you finish the first time you really sit down to play it, and it ends right around the time it wears out it's welcome.
