The fishing tutorial is literally just wrong.
You hold away from the fish's position and press X to land it.
That said, the full weapon upgrades bump your play time from 20 to 60 hours. Maybe 5 of those extra hours aren't Hell. Getting all trophies enhances your understanding of the game's point, but if you're already the kind of person who doesn't force yourself to 100% you get it and don't need that.
In short, only put as much into Nier as you want to.

It's a really fucking enjoyable ride with only one real sour spot along the way. It's simple, definitely nowhere near as complicated as the other Metal Gears, but the dialogue is top-notch, the character interactions are great, Raiden is real fun as a character, and there's some really great twists and turns. It's one of /v/'s favorites for a reason.
