Basically. On hard, normal battles aren't too bad most of the time, but bosses, minibosses, savage enemy encounters, and even the odd random enemy will fight you hard. You can do attacks that lead into other attacks (sessions), and sometimes if feels unfair. Until an enemy hits your weakness and does it right back.Gangrelin particular will welcome you to the land of SMT bosses if you aren't immediately ready to handle his fight properly.

Plot is laughable.
As in, it can actually crack you up at how ridiculous everything is, and so far, it hasn't had any attempt at taking itself seriously, so I'm loving it.
Gameplay is damn solid, and dungeons are pretty nice, although the chapter 2 one is kind of a pain to navigate through when you need to go back to it for quests.
Music is pretty nice, nothing spectacular but it's pretty good.
I'd recommend it, sure.

What does this game compare to? The only SMT-related games I've played are Persona 3 and 4, and never played a Fire Emblem. Is it pretty lengthy? Worth $60?

If you NG+ for Lunatic you carry nothing helpful over besides enemy data. No items, carnages, levels, etc. All you keep are achievements, enemy data, and costumes IIRC.

You won't need much proper FE since 90% of the mechanics are Megaten, so you'll be at home, gameplay-wise. Almost all of the cosmetic shoutouts will be lost on you(e.g. names of characters, weapons, etc.) but it's not like it's terribly essential to actually know for the game proper.

You need the gamepad because it acts as your messenger program 24/7. You get texts from everyone whether it's quest info or just small talk. So just put it to the side and only look at it when there's a text, or you need to use the map.
